Early autumn fishing with my son

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks

Just a few images from a couple of trips out with my five year old to get him away from the telly and into the fresh air.

Set him up with a whip to catch these tiddlers from the river:

We also got a load of these:

So went back with some traps to get a few more and next day they became this (yum yum in a Thai curry):

Now time to try for something bigger and more difficult so a trip roving the little river freelining black slugs for these beauties (a couple of threes and one four pounder, plus numerous others caught):

This river is hardly ever fished and never stocked, in places you can jump across it. It can be quite difficult with eight foot overgrown banks in places so you have to be careful where you tread and especially so with a youngster.

Only downside was that at one stage I had over 200 black slugs in a large container in the garden that I had collected on trips out and unfortunately my new fishing buddy left the lid off so my garden and all the neighbours are infested.

Now we are well into the ferreting season so I'm carefully choosing some easy buries for him to try.

Regards

Chris

Hi Saharashadow,

Yes we were fishing at Parrett Works, Martock near the Southfork caravan park. However, the better chub come from slightly further downstream where the river is faster and more pacier. The crayfish did come from the Parrett Works area as we live just a few fields away. There are a few good chub in there (topping 5lb) and some real quality roach and dace (best baits being corn and flake over a bed of hemp helps avoid the crayfish and fishing well into darkness). There are also some great brown trout in that section to over 4lb. I've fished the river for over 20 years and it throws up some great surprises with some big eels as well as a few wild carp (a real challenge). The wildlife that you see is also amazing with otters regularly seen on almost every fishing trip I do down there that coincides with dusk (they are eating all the crays), and one day in May I witnessed a pair of ospreys working the river on their migratory flight up from Africa.

Just recently joined the club as a committee member and have set up a website for them: www.stoke-sub-hamdonaa.co.uk and membership is gradually increasing as people see the real challenge and surprises of river fishing as opposed to the commercial pools.

Happy fishing, Chris

That sounds an amazing place to fish and I can imadgine a great place to spend time with your son. Becks like that are interesting fishing and often throw up some suprising fish. Cod beck at thirsk is a good example and sounds simelar. Wish you both tight lines atb tom.

Hi Chris. I think the part I fished was by what used to be an old 4 or 5 storey mill and some cottages . A mate of mine knows a guy that owns a house by the mill and he has a few hundred yards of river on his property. He ( the owner),fly fishes the stretch for trout with some success, and I noticed in one particular spot there were loads of crayfish remains...........maybe the otters!! About 5 years ago my mate , who lives in Merriott, near Crewekerne, and I were members of your club and used to fish Long Lode and Bearly Lake. Great part of the country you live. ATB and tight lines.
