anita&paul 0
Now we all know about dry food. Its good, no flies, no maggots, no smell, I WISH ??? BUT is it normal for an animal to drink more than me on a saturday night? after eating this dry food?. My ferrets eat this occasionaly through the summer months but never seem content.. however when i feed them just on Liver, kidney, heart and lung from the rabbit it seems to make them more aggresive!!! But when feeding natural food rabbit, pigeon etc... they are more steady if fed the whole animal/bird ie: feather and fur as well.. it definately seems to suit them as nature intended.. WELL WHAT DO YOU THINK??????????????? Quote Link to post
jultaylor1972 2
I would imagine that a natural diet is always the best for ferrets Quote Link to post

Guest little_lloyd
Mine hate dried food and only give it when theres not much choice. Give them any fur&feather they will take it out of your hands before you can put it in Quote Link to post

WELL WHAT DO YOU THINK??????????????? I think dried food is complete and utter shit, I tried feeding it when I first got my Ferrets. I wouldnt even consider feeding it anymore Switching to it in the Summer is no excuse either, just feed them after dark and collect in morning. Simple. Mine would go threw 1 big bottle of water every 2 days when they were on it Now there on meat, it would last well over a week if I didnt change it. Not sure if it was me imagining it but I could swear they used to be ALOT more hyper on it too Running up and down the cage, scatty in hands etc They also shit soooooooooo much, a weeks worth of meat shit in a day Horrid poo too, all brown and shiny. Im probably going overboard, but the thought of feeding them it 24/7 turns my stomach now I just couldnt do it..... Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Paul; I've kept one or two ferrets for a season or two in my time mate. I've also stated, once or twice, on this very forum ~ and others of its kind: Look to nature. Does the wild and naturally living version of the ferret (the Polecat) eat whole, dead things? Or does it eat shit out of a greasy little bag? Another favourite of mine: Take a sack of that same greasy, pelleted or flaked shit and set a cage trap baited with it. Ye'll catch a rat. I promise ye. If Anyone can come to me and show me hard evidence that they've caught a healthy, free living Polecat in a single entry cage trap, baited only with 'ferret biscuits', I'll sit down and shut the f*ck up. I'll never argue against that kidney destroying, american pet trades invention again. I swear. People who trot out lame shit excuses for feeding their ferrets on shit like that simply aren't fit to be in charge of ferrets. People have kept ferrets perfectly well, for centuries if not thousands of years. Why now, other than because the shit exists and is 'conveniant' to the so called keepers, should rubbish like flys become an issue? Know what it is? Those people don't get out. They have no hunting skills. They don't leave the cities they live in. They get ferrets to feel like Field Sportsmen (or women). They are living a lie and forcing their own delusions down their ferrets throats. Could I make my views any clearer? Quote Link to post
mole catcher 1
i feed mine on both dry and natural food throughout the year, both winter and summer and can honestly say i notice no adverse effects in their behaviour or their condition what so ever. Of course as has been said, feeding dry food they do drink a lot more water but then so would we if we ate nothing more than jacobs cream crackers. Ballance is the key to any animals diet. Kay 3,709
I did a little experiement some yrs ago, 2 ferrets were fed on dry alone, 2 were fed meat alone & 2 were fed a mix of the two, the ferrets that i found looked better physically were the ferrets fed on a mix of the two. The ferrets fed on dry alone were over weight but had good coats, the pair fed on meat were not fat but there coats were not as lush , the 3 rd pair had slightly less dry food but seemed to be just right, there coats wwere good they wernt overweight , so i feed the two options, we all know meat is essential for there well being but the dry food added as a standby can make life easier during the warmer weather. They drink loads when fed on dry food alone so its vital people are aware of this during the summer especially, i have filled dishes with water but my two just scratch it out of the dish so i have no choice but to use bottles which i dont think deliver enough water for a thirsty ferret I think dry food was developed for the show fraternity & i remember james Wellbeloved had only just been formulated when i had my first ferret so i had no experience of feeding flesh , everyone was raving about the new dry food & there was an explosion of food companys who followed suite, i did have a bag of dodson & horells ''chudleys"" to trial when they were formulating there food about 10 yrs ago , but if i could guarantee no smell. flies or maggots i woulndt use dry food now personally Quote Link to post
anita&paul 0
thanks for all the comments on ferret and polecats, it's nice to hear that we all have similar ways of feeding our animals. we apolgise for the late reponse, we're blaming the whisky and brandy........ regards nita and paul Quote Link to post
Guest john2007oliver
I started of feeding my ferrets on dry but the alst couple of months shes been getting pigeons, doves, rabbit, the occasinally maggie or crow. But now im thinking, i've got 12.5 kg of dry food in the garden, when her kits are feeding themselves, i'll have to put dry in there to get rid of it as the frozen stuff will last but all the dry does is attract rats and mice and will go off. But for me, i think feeding raw is more convinient. Quote Link to post
