gaz 284
You will always have the summer coursers tramping the fields with usually a pack of untrained running dogs running anything that gets up in front of their world- beaters  but you will find this same lot will never be in the fields when the first chill of the colder weather comes again,at this time of the year they will be boring some poor bugger in the pub or somewere or another, telling them how good their lurchers are and how many (summer and leverets ) hares they,ve had with them this year its something you,le always have sadly. But killing foxes at this time of the year sometimes has to be done, not for sport or to test your dogs working abilities in the field, but to help out with lamb and poultry killers ect. What i mean by this is usually during the winter time on most of my permision im left to my own devices and when i do take a fox and tell a shepperd, yes he is pleased but from feb to about now he is over the moon as he will usually be losing lambs, also anybody who keeps poultry will be getting hit hard aswell, losing many more birds at this time of the year, more so than at any other time, this in turn keeps me in the good books of the land owner but correct me if im wrong but these are the reasons foxes need to be controlled, yes at times cubs may suffer if a suckling vixen is took but i will allways if i can try and find the set where the cubs are and end any suffering, well that was before the ban mind When im out during the season i mostly clear things first with a phone call the night before or dropping in, in the morning for a chat with farmer ect but from feb onwards iam usually the one who receives the phone call asking if i can come as soon as,so the way i look at it is if i didnt do it somebody else will and in turn would leave me much less ground to run my dogs but as for killing hares at this time of the year.......... Irish Lurcher 1,013
Take about making a mountain out of a mole hill, but deal he killed a fox during the summer, each to their own, why cause such a roar, beats me. If the said fox was causing damage to live stock then I would have done same, try tell the farmer that summer foxs are not on the list until winter and that he will just have to watch his stock been attacked until then, your ass wont touch the ground as he kicks you out. Come on lads be sensible. Quote Link to post
Guest MOLLY
im sorry to have upset people but the farmer has got a liven to make from his stock and that fox was doin damage we called the fox it and shot it and as you all no not every shots a clean kill so to stop it from dieing in pain we sliped the dog to catch it was killed instant Beagles you have stated you were called out by the farmer to take care of a rogue cub killing half grown lambs! (I presume that was the case?) Go back and read the 1st two lines of my post. Right, now you have re-read it, i think you will find that i actually agreed, pest control sometimes has to be done all year around, i dont have a problem with that. Surely as a person providing a pest control service for someone, you also enjoy the fruits of that permission, spending enjoyable winter nights, taking pest for sport aswell as control, if so, you will then surely know where i am coming from. It would be a long winter if you found all your permission was practically devoid of game due to amateur's killing it all during the spring/summer, not allowing it to breed because they do not understand the true meaning of sportsmanship, the true history/traditions of hunting with dogs and the reasons why we have seasons for all forms of hunting? My post was not just aimed at fox, but rabbits, hares, absolutley anything we work our dogs to during the 'hunting season'. What about the double standards here? It is ok to kill fox or rabbits if they are being a pest, but its not ok to kill hare...what is the difference between a hare and a rabbit if they are a pest to the farmer, then they are a pest...is it because to some people they provide 'sport' during the 'hunting season'? Why is it, when someone has a point of view different to someone elses, in a heated debate, they then call them 'antis'? It strikes me these people are very naive or dim and have had absolutley no dealings with antis, and do not know the meaning of the word, or what they are capable of, because if they did then they would know to someone who is aware, it is the worst possible insult they can throw at a hunter. They should be totally ashamed of themselves, and have no place walking among true hunters. If a discussion is not going the way you want it to then prove your point through intelligent discussion, not pathetic school boy name calling. I very much doubt antis call each other cold blooded hunters when they disagree about the finer points of sab'ing. Perhaps they are more united, perhaps thats why they won?! MOLL. Quote Link to post
