Squirrel_Basher 17,100
If your dogs near a decent age mate ,lets say 15 to 18 months for a big lurcher and 13+ for a little un then take it out on its own and not with others. The bad habits of some so called lampers may not be what you want in your own dog .Any fuckups at this stage should be your own doings and not the fault of others .The dog will of course be broken to all livestock by now :thumbs:as early bad habits are best avoided .Take it to where theres a few rabbits not loads as it needs to concentrate on what you light up and not be distracted by hoards of rabbits making for the hedge .The run you choose is hopefully going to be in the dogs favour .Stalk up to a squatter if you can from downwind and let the dog smell it .Dont slip until you bump the rabbit as it will overrun the squatter guaranteed if it dosnt see it move .The out come is out of your hands but i wouldnt push for any more than three runs regardless of a catch and if he catches first time then concentrate on the retrieve no matter what it takes as with any subsequent catches .Take the dog home fresh and wanting more then try another night .The best dogs ive known are those owned by those who get out there and do it mostly on their own .Loads more to it than that but the basics are here to get you started and remember to keep up the basic training as this is when it all goes tits up for some owners who cant be bothered or dont know how to correct faults at this stage .
