Hw 95 Pellet testing 25 and 50 Yards

Recommended Posts

Monday was a very calm day so I took the opportunity to do a little testing with the HW95.

The set up was two targets placed at 25 and 50 Yds. The idea was to shoot prone to test 4

different pellets. Pellets used were AA fields, H+N FTT, Acupells and RWS superdomes.

The method was to shoot 5 pellets at 25 Yds and then 5 at 50 Yds giving ten shots of each

pellet. All the pellets were out of the tin un washed or weighed. The other variable

would of course be my ability to stay consistent.

The set up

The groups @ 25 yds

AA Fields 18mm First shot went high and was discounted so re zeroed a little so group size includes this

H+N FTT 9mm much better all shots went through 2 connected holes. recoil seems less than AA's

Accupells 35mm these do not like this barrel but do well in the AA s410. I reshot this group to get a 39mm

group just to see if my concentration was at fault. seen lower right in pic.

RWS superdomes 14mm group

The AA fields and the FTT's are close on correction as described above.

The groups at 50 Yds

AA fields 32mm a 20mm group spoiled by one

H+N FTT 35mm two 11mm groups spaced

Accupell's 44mm 18mm group spoiled by one. pretty close to 25yd group size

Superdomes 38mm 1st shot a whole mil dot lower so reshot the 5 discounting the 1st

These sound very draggy, hissing through the air. Good at shorter ranges and crush resistent.

It can be seen in the 50 yard pic. this was not my best day for long range springer shooting despite having near

perfect conditions. My groups are sometimes a bit less spread.

There was some group stringing going on due to my ability on the day to manage the recoil. Never the

less I was fairly pleased to be getting some very tight pairs and three's so there is plenty of fun to be

had improving.

I had a wander about the perm. just for a look see and returned refreshed. I sat for a while to watch a Sparrowhawk

hunting the hedges only to have it fly within feet of me and turn so sharply that I heard it's wings swoosh.

It then grabbed a blackbird and flew to a distant post to enjoy a meal.

I always feel good when I witness the daily lives of our amazing variety of wildlife at close quaters. All too

often this makes up for poor days sport.

In fine spirit I decided to shoot a few more 50 yard groups with Ftt's this was the first one 24mm for 5 shots

my best yet here is the pic.

My shooting had taken another step with a personal best for this gun I abandoned further testing and went home

Very happy.

Spot on Scot

The gun was tuned by me. I am a born tinkerer. After seeing a pellet staying on top of Si's scope on firing I had to try and achieve it. It took lots of strip down to get it. I still think there is room for improvement.

But every time I change something I have to shoot chrono and repeat to verify the results. I found that 11 ft lbs is the sweet spot 11.2 is getting much a harsher firing cycle.

I will get there in the end then I can sit back and enjoy the work I put in.

Practice on paper is the best way of having the confidence to make the live shot count, plus you have a copy of your aility and gun tune over time.

that turned into a bit of a waffle

think elliots is a 77 :hmm::laugh:   lol

my old 97 syn .177 was sweet as a nut after about 3000 pelllets straight from factory at 11.1ft lbs should have kept it! lol

getting another .177 97k and going to put my wooden thumbhole stock on my .22 on it and then put the sporter stock on the .22 97 i have now. then il be sorted

did you seee my thread ''first outing in a while hw95k'' a few days ago.. theres a 28 yard grouping on there that i was really happy with . take a look if you get chance

:censored: ocks that's the 2nd time I have got a gun wrong on this forum :icon_redface:

I would like a 95 in .20 then I could mix and match. Plus have a play with the ballistics and tuning

My dream tinkering gun would be a 90 with a full compliment of barrels. Then I could compare cals. and make direct comparisons without stripping it down.

Scott's quite right, its a 1985 HW77K :) I've been thinking of a 95 or 98 in .20 recently

Im picking up a new hw97k in .177 satdy or monday then i wont be buying another gun untill next year. but after that my next one might be a .20 never tried one.. is there a decent range of pellets in .20??

I think there's plenty of choice now, especially with mail order. Can't see me dropping to .177 but .20 is tempting
