need advice

hi all just need a bit of advice. when beating with my dog i keep her quite close hunting through the thick stuff. but alot of beaters just let there dogs go & they run on & i can see birds getting up way in front then when my bitch gets there she' on the scent but does'nt get a flush only the odd one they have missed. will this effect her in anyway. after all the training i dont want to just let her do the same. many thanks. it all depends on how close you have her mate and how far the other dogs are [a dog that worksTOO far in front is no good to me -but one that only works 3 ft away from me isno good to me either ] i work koda so that he knows his distance allowed 30 odd feet i believe in giving a dog a bit of freedom to do what comes naturally ie hunt! if she gets too far just whistle her back in and start again ps i have been on shoots that let dogs run wild but its not my cuppa and it is ashame that your dog doesnt get many flushes you may have to find a different shoot mate that has well controlled dogs -billy

Sounds like you have your bitch nicely trained. When a dog is under control it is working for you, when a dog is 30 + yards away it is working for itself and will cover the ground in a haphazard manner. Keep your dog under control and you will get more than sufficient flushes because game will have been missed.

 

Also be aware that as your dog gets more experienced, she will start to extend her hunting distance from you, just keep reminding her who is the boss!

Have to agree with the above, 15ft is about the max distance.

 

I've had the same expirience on two shoots this season, peoples dogs 60-70yds in front and sending the birds up before anyone else's got there, pissed me right off, asked the owners to bring em back in so everybodies dog had a chance to flush but you'd have thought i'd shit in there shoes they way the just looked at me, i got told you dont stop a worker!!!. At lunch i had a word with the keeper about what was happening, he soon had a word with em and they didnt show for the next drive. No one wants to winge, we are all there to enjoy the day but if your dogs not getting the reward of a flush when it's working it's socks off it's not on.

Keep you dog as it is, pick the drives you know best once you are used to them and pick who's dogs yours is running with. Some people overlook the best places to find birds, so next time you out remember where the birds held up previous and try to get on them before they do. It is a good thing that she has not seen many but been listening to all the commotion and smelling there sent but still stayed with you, I would say that the training is paying off. Don't let her get into bad habits like the dogs 60 yards from there owners.

If their dogs are rushing chances are they are missing birds, teach your dog to do the job properly it's not a race and when your dog brings up the rear and finds all those missed birds you then have a reason for bringing it up to the person running the drive

hi all thanks for the replys.it's good to know that i'm not on my own & being to fussy . i'm going to keep doing what i think is right. i dont want to let it all go after all the training. many thanks. Daz
