A Mornings Ferreting

Recommended Posts

Reading about every one being out this season, I thought id sort all out all my gear last weekend ready for that first frost (which we still havent had). Whilst i was sharpening my knifes i recieved a phonecall from a farmer of a christmas tree farm i have permission on. He was letting me know he has filled out my new permission form for the season ahead. I arranged to pick it up the following sunday and whilst i was there have a mooch about with the ferrets.

Due to a late night on saturday i was up and out the door at around 8:00 am. Arrived at 8:35 slipped on wellies and took a walk. When first looking at the hedge line i imediatly knew it would be a wash out, but i thought feck it i shall give the new kits a bit of experiance. 95% of the holes were covered by nettles and i wernt in the mood to be getting stung. I grabbed my gear and droped it all at the end of the hedge and started to net. I manage to net 70% off holes but like i say it was more the experiance for the kits. i got about 1/4 the way down and thought ill let it settle and have a touch of soup. There was only one warren out off all i netted but due to ferreting this hedge before i have found they sit up in these 1-3 hole stops. so I changed the batteries in the collars and collared them up. Dropped the ferrets on the floor and let them find there own way there. They both went under instantly but nothing happened, untill i got to the warren. i dont usally put two ferrets down one hole but i thought ill go for it just for teaching purposes. Within seconds i heard the thumping down below and bang, three rabbits bolted at once. Two of them in the purse nets and one dissapeared back where i have just ferreted. Dispatched both of them quickly and re netted just in case. One of the ferrets came out and wasnt bothered about going back under so in the box she went and the over seemed to be having to much fun Pi**ing about under ground. The finder came out to see if she was sitting on anything and she wasnt, so i put a rabbit by the hole and let her come out on own. She came out 10 minutes later and i boxed her up.

I had a good hours ferreting, gave the little loves a bit of experiance so i thought id call it a day on the view i could off gone home with nothing. I started putting the nets away and come across one that had been taken inwards i gave it a tug nothing in the end but a bunch of fur. I re netted the hole and stuck one ferret down, two secs later thump thump followed by a squel. The finder came out got a mark 3 foot down so i started the dig, 2 minutes later the 3rd rabbit of the day was dispatched.

Game over for me. It wasnt my best bag by far, but for a few hours and a couple of this years kits i was happy.

Once got home one of the rabbits went to the ferrets and the other two all prepared and in salt water ready for me to cook up using some off the great recipies i found in the cooking section on here.
