Skull Hooker 185
Hi everybody I have a problem with my 4 yr old spinger in that he works too far in front.(40yds) Is there a tried and tested traning method of reducing that distance so he works to about 10 yrds. Its my fault in that I have let it slip over the years, and the first day out yesterday was a bit of a nightmare as, due to a new knee, his usual pre season regime has not taken place. Any tips?? Philluk 181
Find an area of open space with bits of brambles, long grass etc, but nothing that you won't lose sight of him. Go to the middle on a lead and get him to work round you as you go in one direction, if he gets too far use the command you want I use steady and then you turn around and walk in opposite direction, keep doing this when he comes back to you praise him encourage him and change direction again, if you use a clock face so say walk forward at 12 come back to 6 then 3 then 9 etc, he will learn to stay close to you. Occasionally drop down in the long grass and hide again its about teaching him to watch you and want to be with you. Remember dogs remember the last command or bollocking so if he goes to far, you shout, he comes back then you shout again, he thinks your shouting at him for coming back. Quote Link to post

I have to admit, this is a mistake I have made in the past, and I have to teach him to trust me again as you say. Thanks for all your advice Quote Link to post
GEOFF.223 83
my dog started to do this as i think i was throwing the decoy to far so i have started throwing the closer. and yes from time to time she will go out abit so i call her back and send her out again and watch her if she goes to far i get her to halt an then give a left or a right arm signal . i have also noticed if i throw a decoy 10 times +[bANNED TEXT] wee set out for a hunt it takes abit of exciting out of her as as soon as she see's decoy go away she knows its time to get the nose down .
