deer dogs (preban)

My mate had a saluki whippet grey 23 tts that took deer regular, and his brother had a deerhound x greyx collie grey who was a big strong dog at 28tts and well let's just say he was a very very handy dog pre-ban

 

i think if i had to have one just for deer pre ban it would have to be a deerhound x

 

Saluki x for me, but i have never had a deerhound x, i just stick to what i know

 

i think the saluki would probably be a better choice if i am honest turn it into a bit of an all rounder.....

 

A lot of people dont like them, but put the time in, and they are hard to beat, and never revert to heavy handed tactics, or else you aint going nowhere

 

Not having a go mate, but have you actualy owned a Saluki or Saluki X ? You are dead right about the "heavy handed", by the way

Its the only cross i have ever owned, hence the reason why i never slag another x off, yet i do have good words to say about x's i have seen do good things, but i must admit, i am very biased towards my saluki x's

 

how long would you find these courses last gamerooster i.e a deer in the open (i no everyone is different etc...)

 

How long is a peice of string, depended on the terrain, the dog, the condition the ground was in, bucks or does, the law, and the time of year, anywhere from seconds to 2 minutes, but the later where poor or in-experienced dogs

 

so no need for the stamina of a saluki x for it then depending on ground and all other aspects etc

If some of ye want saluki and some of ye want deerhound what about a Saluki X Deerhound??

Apparently deer turn into slugs after dusk and carnt run

 

by no means do they turn into slugs at night, but even a poor excuse of a dog stand a higher chance of pulling one at night than in the day, seen many poor dogs pull by simply have it run into a fence, never seen this in the day though

Only if you pick the mugs and do all your running at the begining of the season then pack your dogs away untill march when deer are softened up again, go single out some bucks and test your dogs a bit then come back and tell me different. Pure collies will take the wankers and mug them before there up and running Not everyone who ran deer preban was satisfied with taking the easy ones some prefered to test there dogs

Plenty of deer make mistakes during the day and hitting fences isn't uncommon. At your young age it's not surprising that you haven't seen or experienced a lot of things that are fairly common. As you get older and get more experience under your belt you'll see a lot more things.

very true, but I myself have run a good few head of roe, nothing else, and in the day I am yet to see one hit the fence, I once seen a Roe buck jump 3 seperate fences, clearing them all like they were not there, all the time running flat out, But in all honesty, the deer rarely had a chance to leave the field.

Seen Roe do the same feat mate..the bull wire on both sides of a standard mesh fence with double strand on top..cleared the lot without breaking stride,i've seen Red's take the same setup right out the ground and off into the distance with it lol..Fallow clear a double mesh fence (one on top of another)..if their "spooked" and fearing for their lives well they will try just about anything,also seen a Red snap a post with single strand of barbed wire attached and swim the breadth of Coniston Lake..
