17hmr scope

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm just starting to gather advice about a scope for my 17hmr.

I've not yet bought the 17hmr, but I'm already thinking what scope.

I have it down for rabbits and fox, obviously fox is limited range.

So I'd like a fixed scope I think, is it true that with a fixed scope that you dont need to fiddle with it to set your target. I'm thinking that centre is centre, (what I mean is the centre cross in the recictle) whether the distance is 50yd/75yd or even 100yd? is this true?

Thanks

You will need to zero any scope to a set distance, which involves "fiddling" with the adjustment drums.

I am guessing you are a complete novice to any form of rifle shooting, so I am guessing you are either joining a club or being mentored by somebody. They will be able to offer good advice to you.

The question you have asked indicates that you may need to get a bit of shooting experience behind you before you start on live quarry, for the sake of the animal. No rifle can just be point and shoot there are to many other variables you will have to consider, in all but zero range in ideal conditions.

If this isnt the case, I apologise.

I would advise a variable magnification myself, from between 3-9, or 3-12 or 4-16, but look around and try and have a go with somebody elses.

All the best.

My mistake, I have used scopes on my airguns, so know about zeroing etc. I also know about quarry respect and all that.

So with a variable will I need to turn any knobs to know when my target will be in the centre of shot?

I have a friend who will be my mentor also.

Thanks

Once your rifle is zeroed, you will not need to turn any knobs on your scope to hit the target, at that range, unless adjusting for wind. However depending upon the distance you zero it at, you will have to aim off or adjust the further back from that zero range you will go. Just like with an air rifle :hmm:

I really dont know what else you mean when you say " will I need to turn any knobs to know when my target will be in the centre of shot?"

It isnt the sort of question I would expect from somebody who is used to using a TS.

If you mean something completley different, please explain.

I won't beat about the bush here, I am just amazed that an feo has given her a ticket for a .223 and .17 when quite clearly there isn't even basic knowledge there of how to use a scope.

I am now really wondering what knowledge she has of the effective and maximum range, the risk of ricochets and over penetration and the need for good back stops.

Now fiona, don't take my answer the wrong way, but I have been looking at some of your other threads aswell, and seriously am wondering whether this is a wind up.

It's just my nature to ask, ask and ask again. It's my way of broadening my knowledge.

Obviously some people will be biased and only want their opinion to be heard, others will state the facts, the latter is obviously my preferred choice of advice.

Thanks

I have to agree completely, it's all very well asking questions fiona22, but you are asking questions that, as tegater has said, indicate a total lack of knowledge. I hope you have someone near to you that has good experience and can stop you making a dreadful mistake...

i have a simple Nikon stiring mil dot on my cz .17 i have calibrated mild dots out to 200 meters

but i dot dare shot live quarry in the wind with it.

i took it out on a breezy day just to check how bad it would be affected by wind the simplest way i can express wat i seen was shock.

windy days 120m max

breezy days 150m max

calm summer condition 200m

I've just read somewhere online people adjusting the turrets for windage?? So, you have never used the turrets for anything whilst zeroing, they tend to move the reticle which effects the POI which is what they are there for, Windage, Elevation, Zeroing!

Just what is this thread all about? I'm really struggling with this!

Please explain to me why you are genuine and simply Naive beyond words, and not a wind up merchant! :hmm:
