lurcher330 2,297
We where meant to head out Wednesday night for a quick spot of lamping when the wind was blowing a gale and a decent drizzle of rain about, but it turned out the lads couldn't get out and me being off the road at the moment meant i had to sit it out aswell, but we organised to get out last night ,but conditions where not in our favor ,it was calm as could be and the mist and fog had settled in the low lying place's,but headed out regardless,if we where to wait for perfect conditions all the time we would never get out. We headed to a spot we had not touched on yet this season, not many rabbits about but usually good for a fox or two,the first field there was fox over in the far corner ,I started calling and he started coming in but he soon could wind of us and was off,we headed into the next field which had a few rabbits sitting out,i sent my bitch out to one that was squatting about 50 yard from the cover,It rose just before she got to it and with with a couple of turns out of it the 1st rabbit was in the bag, On the way down to the next field i gave the lamp a shine through a gap in the hedge and could see 2 foxes out in the field, but as soon as they where lit up they where off,so instead of making noise trying to make our way through this gap,we made our way down to the gate ,we let the dogs of the slips as we where getting over the gate and they made their under the fence ,but straight away they where off and running which is not not like them,so a flick of the lamp and they where up close and personal with a fox ,they turned him off the cover and another few more turns out in the field they had him nailed,(a good size dog fox) While we where over with the fox,the cattle in the field start showing some interest in us and as i turn to switch the lamp on them, there was another fox standing about 30 yards away from us,,My bitch copped it straight away, but it ran over the brow of a hill and was off ,the bitch came trotting back a little while after. then in the same field we spotted a rabbit squatting in the middle,D.Ds bitch was sent out and with some hard work ,took this rabbit after knocking it out of the cover a couple of times, We walked on then a good bit but nothing to be seen,so we crossed a road and into some recently cut stubble fields, there was a few rabbits sitting and i sent my bitch out to the one i thought most suitable ,it straight lined it back to the ditch and made it safely into the cover, then D.Ds bitch was sent out to another one that had it's back turned to us in the stubble, she slightly over ran it and when she turned back on it ,it was already heading heading back in towards the lamp, the bitch was making ground on it but ,it reached us before she could get into it and my bitch took it while still on the slip. the squeals from it caught the attention of a fox up in the far corner, but once he had the lamp in his face he had second thoughts ,but started calling just to see if i could get him in close enough to get a slip,he had no interest but we seen another 4 sets of eyes in this field, I kept calling and one of them just kept running in even with the light in his face, but he was straddling the ditch ,he came close enough for a slip but he gave the dog a couple of turns and made it to the cover,so we walked on a bit and seen another rabbit out in the stubble,i sent my bitch out ,she knew something was there but could just not see it.but this one also ran towards us,it ran with in 5 feet of me and just squatted,I walked towards it and picked it up by the ear. We walked another couple of stubble fields but had no joy,and all the fields back towards where we had the van parked where blank bar seeing a few foxes in the distance that showed no interest in coming in close enough, We arrived back at the Farmers house where the van was parked and there was a few rabbits popping around his garden,D.Ds little bitch was slipped on one and she caught it right beside the van,so 5 rabbits and a fox ,not a bad night for the conditions ,but worth a walk around with the terriers the weekend.
