reminds me of a nights poaching in my youth,poaching local estate at about 2 o clock ,wet wild night ideal for "tree chickens" ,anyway ma neebours all talkin aboot keepers new night dog gsd/bullmastiff alegedly feckin ferocious man catchin ,crotch holding heavyweight,phew! and not only that there had been about 3 recent sighting of the fife big cat suposed to be a black panther! these three sightings if you joined the locations up on a map made a big triangle round the estate in which i was now standing with little a 22 an a pocket of subs ,already on edge cause i was now standin on the most feared estate (keeper an animal) in the area usualy took a dog (if only to give the keepers night dog somthin to chase rather than me! but he was lame from lampin rabbit s) sure i thought keeper will be bedded the night as i knew he had been walkin up partridges all day with guests then the flight ponds were hit hard that evninig,and that usualy ment a long night in the local hotel congratulatin each other .so i caried on suddenly as i moved through the wood i aproached a gully an old local poacher showed me this years ago a deep gully in the woods sheltered from the wind and a haven for game of all types especialy in stormy weather,no change as i cuold already see there outline as i crept in ,head down gun up i stopped, knelt, still head down, peice still no wind, shot was gonna be loud here i thought ,looked up face mask pulled up to eyes feckin hell 12 birds in first tree bringin gun to shoulder i hears somethin big move on the leaves about six feet away sounded like a big dog gettin up from bed its has made in pile of leaves,fecking froze to the spot rigid hackles on neck on end, listening ,eyes peering into darkness waiting more noise! scratchin! somthin big slowly turnin head an gun and at same time taking pocket torch from pocket in line now, more movement big cat or bullmatiff cross whats worse! shit birds rocketing from tree s now allarm calls ,busted an about to be pounced on by panther or get ma balls chomped by mastiff cross ,feck this aint runin only trigger chase mechanism in big pred an proffesional ball chomper, head up still kneelling raising gun slowlly,more noise more sky rocketing birds, safety off, shakin deep breath,breathe out slowly trigger finger on trigger guard, still shakin,torrch and finger on trigger together peering cant see ,.................feckin hell ,2 hedgehogs noisy little beggers am goin home!!!!!!!!!!
