fiona22 0
Hi, how much should I expect to shell out for the kit needed to reload my own 223 ammo. Is any of the kit considered a firearm, so would need to be declared on FAC? A guy I know says that he makes his own for £0.18p.................................although I haven't read this sort of evidence online. He uses hollow points for foxes. Thanks Quote Link to post

A guy I know says that he makes his own for £0.18p.................................although I haven't read this sort of evidence online. He uses hollow points for foxes. Thanks Hi Fiona, ok firstly reloading kit is very much like a lot of other shooting related tackle, there is a cheap(but not inferior) way to do it, a second hand set of lee dies and a cheap and cheerfu press, like the excellent lee hand press should set you up, you will need a set of scales, lee are fine if a little fiddly, some basic equipment like a lee case length guage, a cutter, lock stud, primer pocket cleaner, powder funnel, are all to coin a phrase cheap as chips,as a basic kit that apart from primers ,powder, bullets, are all you need to get you going,I would suggest you get a good reloading manual, and watch some online reloading videos,it really is not the black art some would have you beleive, none of the equipment needs entering on your FAC execept in some areas bullets will need to be entered on your ticket, please feel free to ask any questions you may have and I and others will do our best to guide you in the right direction, and as for cost yes I would have thought 20 pence a bang should be acheivable with .223, cheers hope this helps. fiona22 0
Many thanks for the good advice. Where will I find a decent manual? What is the cost of the kit needed? And how much do bullets/primers/powder cost? Thanks Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Many thanks for the good advice. Where will I find a decent manual? What is the cost of the kit needed? And how much do bullets/primers/powder cost? Thanks Look up reloading manual on fleabay, or a good country bookseller, modern reloading by Richard Lee is a very good buy,you can buy a Lee hand press kit for about 45 quid, new dies 30 quid, scales, bits and bobs 30 quid ish, so lets say a hundred quid for the kit, powder around 35-40 quid a pound, bullets depends on what you buy, my personal favourite Sierra are about 14 quid a hundred in .223, and primers about 3 quid a hundred, any more questions feel free to ask, so have to ask Fiona what do you shoot with your rifle? nice to hear from a lady shooter. fiona22 0
Thanks, will have a look on web to see if I find any decent guides. Richard Lee probably has the best would you say? Have watched a few youtube clips. It's all a bit confusing for me at the moment. I've not actually got a rifle yet, the FEO made his visit last night, and persuaded me to get a co-terminous, so he will call back on Monday to pick up all the paperwork and then he said it should take a month. So I'm going to shoot foxes mainly. Also getting a 17hmr for rabbits and fox. I shot a friends 223 and loved it, so I wanted one. The fiddle of reloading has got me tempted. So none of the powder/primer/bullets need to be on my FAC as I didn't ask for loads to keep or buy, obviously I won't make more than I am allowed to keep. Thanks for the advice. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Ok nice one, the hmr is not the best choice for foxes,it will kill them but please keep ranges sensible,75 yards is about the limit to be sure of a clean kill, mr R lees book is a very good choice, dependent on where you buy the bullets will dictate if they need to be entered on your ticket, however be WARNED, expanding bullets are classed as loaded rounds so be careful not to exeed your quota, have a look on the stalking directory, on the reloading section, there is a very good article with photos on the whole process from empty case to loaded round, shame you are a long way from me or you could call round and I would go through the whole thing,so if you are ever up Sheffield way look me up, get your .223 asap, it is worlds away from the hmr, let us know how it goes, and any more questions feel free to ask, cheers. fiona22 0
Many Thanks again for great advice. My mentor does the whole reloading thing and has told me to come and have a look, but I just wanted to get my own angle on it first as I dont like hassling people. How much should I expect to pay for a 223 setup? Rifle, Scope, Sling, Mod? I really like the look of a Browning, synthetic, stainless, but do I really need to pay that much? One thing I dont like is the look of the shorter barrels Thanks again Quote Link to post
masmiffy 82
Hi Fiona good luck with the application. I am sat waiting for mine (also co-terminus) to hit the mat have got 22 rimfire 17HMR and 223 on mine. I have been using a mates Howa 1500 (in his company) and its a good rifle if a little heavy on the trigger! Set up like his should be around £480 rifle £300 moderator £500(+) scope £50 bipod £25 sling (all approx numbers) Quote Link to post

One thing I dont like is the look of the shorter barrels Thanks again Ye the shorter barrels do drop the velocity down on a centerfire, however on a rimfire they are very desirable, choosing a rifle and how much to pay is a question all beginners ask about, if you find a rifle in your price range that fits well and feels right, then buy it, I am a huge fan of Howa rifles, however I would not choose one in.223 as there are far lighter rifles out there, CZ are an excellent choice, light, robust and very accurate,Browning A bolt is another good choice, again light, accurate and good looking, to be honest my preferance would be for a .222 rather than .223 its a buyers market for them at the moment, they are one of the most accurate calibre out there, not generally ammo fussy, and very easy to reload for, you should be able to get a very nice, serviceable rifle, scope and mod for 750 ish, guntrader is a good place to start, whatever rifle you buy, whatever you do dont put a cheap crappy scope on it,I dont mean you hane to spend 2k but just buy something decent,Nikon are a favourite of mine, anyway keep the questions comming and keep us posted.
