Matt3699 142
The weather is getting colder as we all know. The fire is getting lit and the heating on more and more. My bitch has a kennel outside and has slept out there since spring. I have her out of the house during the day and in the evenings I have her inside. Then bed times comes and she is off outside and into her cold kennel. I feel like a bit of an asshole kicking her out of the nice warm house and into the cold. But she's an outdoor dog and destroyed the kitchen where she used to sleep as a pup. So off outside she went. I guess what i'm trying to say is... Do you think If dogs are outside dogs, is it best to leave them outside during the evenings? Rather than letting them get comfortable in the warm. Don't get me wrong, her kennel is perfectly fine and has plenty of bedding for her. But going from a warm 20 odd degree house to a pretty chilly 8 degrees and less is a big jump. I have done this with most of my dogs. What's everyone's thoughts on this?

Matt3699 142
It's not really. I'm sure there are plenty people who have a dog inside now and again but have them sleep outside. She's been sleeping outside for months, she's used to it. But my dog is a worker and a pet. The kids enjoy the dog inside the house. But she sleeps outside. Il be sure to keep her locked in her kennel from now on though I'm not sure why this thread needed a sarcastic reply, just trying to spark up some conversation. I'l remember not to do it again.
bullmastiff 615
As long as the sleeping area inside the kennel is fairly small/enclosed and they have plenty of straw to bed down into then it doesn't take the dog long to warm it's bedding area, I really wouldn't worry about it. In my old house where I had the room the dog slept outside, we bought a small shed as a kennel, then lined the inside with wood and built a box at the back stuffed with straw as a bed. He also was allowed to come into the kitchen during the day but sent out at night. If your really concerned about it and want them to sleep indoors but worried about damage/stealing from worktops then buy yourself a dog crate instead of a normal dog bed so at night you can lock them away.

Jesus mate im only pulling your leg. Its your dog you do what you see fit. Its not going to bother the dog if you put it in the kennel even if its minus whatever. If your that bothered then buy it a winter jacket.. ...........you cant think of a dog like a human
matt1979 766
Every dog i ever grew up with, did the same and never did them any harm as long as the kennell is draft free etc, i beleive it helps build a good bond as you get to spend more time with the dog prior to kennelling it at night alongside the kids learning to socialise with the dog under supervision, cheers Matt
paulus 26
i have one retired bitch in home and 2 dogs im running outside. they have a kennel and good bedding also a good sized run, most of the time time the run gate is hardly ever shut but neither will come into the house even when the back door is open, they have there space and me and my family have ours both respect it. Yeah it's not a major concern of mine. But I sat watching her this evening by the fire and felt kind of bad knowing that she was going outside in a few moments. I know she's warm outside, but it got me wondering if it makes a big difference for the dog being in the warm before bed.

I'm a little cranky to say the least. I may actually get her a Jacket for the winter.... But she wont be going out in public with it on
moonlighter 1,163
It's fine what your doing mate, as the alternative is leaving it outside all the time, and then it will be missing out on bonding with you ant the kids. So long as its kennel is warm and dry, then no probs.

moonlighter 1,163
Kennel jackets are great for running dogs, as they don't carry much fat. Try putting your hand under the coat when your dog is wearing it and feel how warm it feels.

Funny you should say that when i was young i remember standing at the Greyhound racing and on a cold winter night sticking my hands under the dogs hap to keep my hands warm.............
