Firearms courses

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am going to be applying for a FAC.

I have 12 years SGC experience but know very little about fire arms.

I have been looking at various courses and have found the BASC sporting rifle course

http://www.basc.org.uk/en/departments/shooting-standards/basc-training-courses/sporting-rifle-course.cfm

Just wonderd if any one else has any experience with this course or can recomend any others?

I presume this sort of course may not only provide me with a basic knowlege of fire arms but may also show me

in good light with the fire arms officer.

although i have a fair bit of permission i still joined a rifle club and did my probation and also because i want to get a Deer caliber rifle i got someone to act as a mentor for me. You have to make sure you don't leave them with any doubt as to why you shouldn't have one.

What are you wanting to do with you rifle? Targets? Deer? Vermin?

I think thats the key, I myself have lots of parcells of land dotted around and to be fair, back then so long as you didnt want a silencer you were in with a shout, they used more common sense and judgement I think, now its just a set of steps they follow, proceedures developed miles away by some one who has little time or need for common sense,

this is very true and most of it isnt law, such as mentoring.

I applied with my land permissions and have just been granted a SGC & FAC - aslong as you can justify why you need them and where you will shoot them you shouldnt have any dramas and16years of shotgun experience will only strengthen your application.

From posting mine it took 4 weeks for the visit and then about 2 weeks for the cert to drop through the post, i also sent a cover letter to explaining why i wanted each rifle and what i was going to use them for, aswel as a small background of my shooting history (stuff you dont get to say on the form) the FAO liked that.. only thing he didnt like was i asked for a .17HM2 and no matter how many good and valid reasons i gave he wasnt budging on me having one on my first cert issue :cray: ... misreable git! :D

Best thing to do is talk to the FAO who covers your area they should be able to give you all the information you need.
