Saluki 9mth training help

Recommended Posts

Ive given into temptation and slipped caine on a couple of easy bunnys, his instinct has kicked in and he has caught them easily.

at the moment once hes caught them he ignores me and does a victory lap around the field... Eventually he reluctantly surrenders his prize and ive been giving him the head afterwoulds as a reward

What can I do to improve his retrieve? Its not brilliant at the minute and I cant have him doing a victory lap every time he catches something its just not practical, I know hes young but will he grow out of this in time? also am I doing wrong by rewarding him with the head? Im almost afraid if I dont share some of his kill with him he will refuse to let me take the rabbit in future... or am I being a soft eejit?

dont give the head he associates that with what he catches open it up and give him the heart and liver as a treat do it a couple of times dont let him play with the carcass, or alternative have a small bag of chicken liver nd heart in your pocket soon as he brings his catch back take it and give him the chicken innards

Gem, plenty of pups 'do the dance' when they start, its simply excitment. Your pup, i'm sure, will settle with time, as long as your recall is good and you put plenty of gear infront of him.

I'd just add that though rewards do work, I've never used 'em in the field, the game itself is reward and I certainly wouldn't use rabbit heads Praise, once back to you with the prize is enough but keep it to minimal and move on to the next target. JMO but as a working lurcher, your dog is bred to do a job, that is to catch and carry to you. Treat it like a king back home once that job is done.

Whatever you do don't loose your temper with him..bite your lip and be patient the one's i have seen take a bit longer to mature and settle down compared to other breed's...if you do loose your rag you will end up with the dog following you home 100yrd's behind you.. :D

I was told that from the beginning, hard to tell him hes a good boy when hes just killed your best laying hen  hes getting better with poultry now but never will be 100% trustworthy around them. Hardest part was training the husband how to handle him

the head is one of the resons he doesnt want to give it up because he associates it with food not rocket science how many salukis have you owned or trained not as many as me I will wager
