No thanks gonetoearth am not that way inclined. I have a border and a staffy both with long tails both crash through all sorts of cover with no probs in fact the staffy would put most dogs to same

I but I wouldn't wag my tail if you were my owner either..

Wilf you crack me up

Alimac to answer ya question like I said before it does not hinder my dogs working ability. Any bodyelse have problems with tail injuries or is alimac the only one?

Spaniels are best example as they are constant tail waggers and a good cover dog will ruin a long tail in no time

All of my terriers are docked and seem to have no trouble doing the reverse ferret, I have seen a terrier with a full tail ( looked like a flag pole in the wind ) that couldn't fold its tail enough to back out of an earth

The result was either a stuck terrier or a terrier that couldn't back off from some very angry quarry, may have been ok in some of the bigger places but in the tight little spots we have here it was an absolute curse for the dog

The tail docking debate has been emotional on all sides but even the antis and the government accepted the reasoned opinion that for the benefit and welfare of working dogs that docking was a better option that a consistently damaged tail and the associated treatment and of course the cost that goes with it

So I would ask you this, do you think you know better than the chief vetinary officer and the government ?

never heard so much shite in all my years of hunting [34 to be presise ]people bitching on and slagging off over the docking of a dogs tail.i personally have no problems with the docking of dogs tails as ive worked terriers ,lurchers and collies, also worked with friends spaniels.all dogs in the hunting field have a purpose lurchers need long tails for balance'yes the docking of spaniels tails prevents injury but all working dogs that are worked regularly sustain injurys.as was mentioned in an earlier post a spaniel with a blooded tail through working black thorn with an undocked tail thats a fare comment, dosn't the dogs ears also get torn doing this work,as i work my dogs 5 times a week through black thorn ,bramble and gorse,my terriers ears and face are always torn and blooded, all i'm saying is when dogs are worked hard and worked regular in this enviroment injurys are anevitable so docking your spaniels is a must to prevent tail injurys only.as for the docking of terriers in my opinion dosnt really make any difference what so ever to the dogs function as worker,in the past i for one wouldn't own a terrier unless its tail was docked'ive bred a few litters and docked there tails and believe it to be a humane practace.i own a undocked terrier at the minute and her long tail dosn't hinder her in the slightest .cant see how a long tail on a terrier hinders its work below ground as border terriers have long tails and go to ground no bother and have done for years as did a lot of other old breeds[fox has a long tail manages to go to ground ok] i olso have no problems with my dogs tails above ground either.i think the docking of terriers tails is more for looks and less for function.me for one wont be docking tails of any more pups i breed in the future as i only breed for my own use as i dont see the need to,ive growing used to the long tales now and like them but that is just my opinion .wich i think every one should be entitled to there opinion without being subjected to a load of abuse i thought . 'suppose i was wrong reading this thread it seems like some people haven't left the school playground al this bollocks makes me wonder if these people actually work there dogs.seems the only pray they hunt is vulnerable people on these threads.happy hunting to all you genuine folk.alb keith j.
