Scratching Ferret

The fert is an albino so fleas should show up easier than they would on say a poley. Just checked him over quickly with a comb(wriggling like hell) and nothing showed up. Although i did spot 2 areas were there was a small circular rash, one on the back of his neck and the other on the underside of his belly just above his meat and two veg lol. Going to bath him in the sink tomorrow and give him a good comb and they are normally running around the house for a few hours on a night anyway so he will get dry nice and quick. Will phone the vets on my lunch and see what they have to say and then if i discover fleas i will try and get down on my lunch hour. Whats the dirt look like mate?

 

You might well be looking at Ringworm then if you've noticed bald circular patches causing itching. Your new fert may have recovered from the strain of Ringworm before you got it but was a 'carrier', now your fert may be infected. As you've seen no evidence of fleas, best to get your fert checked out before it gets worse. ATB

There is no bald patch mate, its a rash under the fur. The rash is very small, like a series of orangey/red spots from what i can remember. I will try and get a picture tonight and i will put it up.

Where do you get your DE from mate, wouldn't mind giving it a bash after reading up about it.

I get mine from the local animal feed mill, £16 a kilo. Put some in an old sock and bash it about the hutch.

I get my frontline from the vets, tell him its for ferrets and he'll give you the stuff used for kittens and pregnant bitches, its weaker than the full strength stuff and wont wipe out your ferrets

Are you not paying full price for a weaker solution?

Ive never had a problem with the stuff for cats and dogs, especially if you pop the ferret in a bag and give him aquick weigh.

Lawrence, I also put DE in the bedding, corners and edges of the hutch.

 

Not had any problems with the weaker solution, does what it says on the bottle, easy to use so saves time and a bottle lasts about three years, bargain

Stealthy, are you on about the spot on or the spray? Im using the spray for cats and dogs, if anything it prob could doing with being a bit stronger. Im sure the spot on is much more potent though. I got through a whole bottle last season of the frontline spray, with no ill effects...

i bought a spray from the pet warehouse for about a fiver. does fleas n mites in smaller hutch kept animals. sold for rabbits, guinea pigs etc but worked a treat on the ferrets.
