morton 5,368
I have an American Staghound that is pretty rough when a dog tries to breed her. I have had her muzzled from the start to keep from getting my friends dog chewed up. This is the first sighthound I've owned. Is this normal or is she just a special case? I've been breeding dogs for some time but this Stag is a different animal. Any insight or suggestions will be very welcome. Certain bitches, especially when in season, become less than sociable and will fight anything that puts weight on their back, ive only encountered it once, missed lining the bitch the 1st time, next season i dropped her back legs over an horizontal pole with her feet just touching the ground, one lad held her at the front,i held her at the rear and moved her tail, the dog then duly obliged, not ideal but worth the trouble involved. Dan McDonough 560
Well I bit the bullet and AI'd her. Your not kidding...should have done it several days ago. I hope it was in time, she was pretty near to being out of heat. Time will tell. That'll test your dedication. I got some instruction from one of the fellows over here and a youtube video. I would suggest every serious breeder learn how to do it. There are a lot less risks to both dogs doing AI and it would be very usefull under a variety of circumstances. Thanks for all of the tips everyone! I may not have used some of them but it helped me get up the nerve to get it done. Edited October 16, 2012 by Dan McDonough Quote Link to post
