So how does a meteorite not slow down lol

I think it does to a certain extent, does it not? :hmm: It's also coming in from a hell of a lot higher and a hell of a lot faster to begin with..

Lord... Everybody knows the dinosaurs died in the great flood cause they were to damn big to get on the Ark. It's simple science ,really.

he reached them speeds due to the less dense air

Too right... so it's settled then. A 218 lb man going 176 feet per second only lands with 15 foot lbs of force which is very survivable .   What now, Felix Baumgartner ? !

ok so i watched it with baited breath and was impressed BUT couldn't help thinking...........

1/ wonder how much that cost?

2/ can a random skydiver ask to better this record?

3/ what did it achieve?

serious questions as i don't know anything about jumping out planes/balloons/skydiving etc........ :)

Vixen, not sure about one or two; although this was all done with private funds. So that's good. As far as number 3, see my post on the previous page.

Gaza, the balloon deflated and came back down from what I heard.

I think people bounce, when they hit the earth on a regular parachute jump,,,, mind it might be different at a couple hundred mile an hour

You've gone and ruined that for Lab now Tomo, with his TV show based version of reality I think he was expecting something more like this:

Thanks for that............i'm scared of heights so when i see these things i can't for the life of me understand why anyone would do it or what good it does, but i suppose if they fund it themselves and they are happy doing it well good luck to them :)

With all due respect, who cares? It didn't cost me, you or anybody else on this forum a single penny, why do people these days always pipe up and moan about how expensive it is when something like this happens.? This event amazed and awed millions of people around the world and on these times when we're constantly being reminded how skint everybody else is and how hard and shit life is, how many people are dying in pointless wars, etc, something like that on the news for a change is priceless and helps remind us about what we are capable of when we put our minds to it..

He slowed down when he entered the atmosphere as at the start of the jump, he was effectively in a vacuum and the earth's atmosphere is like treacle by comparison. Meteorites travel at 25,000 to 150,000 mph and are a bit bigger than a human so obviously would take a lot more slowing down, but they would also slow to terminal velocity if the atmosphere was deep enough.

Aaron - Your calcs mean he would have hit the earth at 15 ft/lb? Would hardly need a parachute.

Because i genuinely wondered "how much it cost" ..........same as i genuinely wondered if a random person who enjoys thrillseeking could do it if they had the funds!.......and no it didn't cost me a single penny, i wouldn't have given a single penny towards it anyhow ........but i did enjoy watching it
