Gaz_1989 9,539
Has anyone installed a soakaway for there dog kennels? What is involved? I've googled it and can only find huge ones for houses and they contain some sort of tank like a sess pit? I was hoping it was just a big hole in the ground with various layers of gravel and hardcore and then connect to kennels with pipe? I only want it for washing water and piss down. PIL 7
GD you are correct a soak away is just a hole with hardcore and shingle with a layer of Transom which is a fiber material that stops earth on top of your soak away sinking into the hole when it's complete ,the size of hole depends on the size of roof area, typically a soak away is metre sq . On a house regs say soak away has to be at least five metres from the building . The ses-pit you described is for sewerage .Hope this helps
Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks lads. How deep a hole are we talking? And how big? Kennel block will be 5m x 2m. Cheer.
earlystart 56
I'd put a trap in.to stop any crap getting into the soak away that way it will last alot longer.
Bootsha 1,306
if you are anywhere near a sewer pipe mate, find it, dig to it and tap into it, a lot less work in the future and smell, even if its just piss and water, a block that size will have a lot of water/ liquid coming off it, you'll need a fair sized soakaway, and if you are in a clay soil type of area, once its filled up, it may take longer to "soak away" than you think. Just my opinion from my experiences. All the best B
Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks for the replies. I was worried a soak away wouldn't be good enough. And thanks early start - I will use a trap if this is the route I go down. I did really want to tap into the mains but my kennel block will be where the dogs are now and the main pipe is by the house, as you can see from the photo it will be a massive job? At least I think it will? I know it's a bad photo but basiclly I would have to come under the top slabs. Under the grass. Then it drops down l the patio area where the table and chairs are. And then the main drain is right by the patio doors. Cheers, Gaz
Bootsha 1,306
dig a trench to put your pipe in, it doesnt need to be the suez canal deep, just sufficiently deep to lay a pipe in under the soil and for a golf ball to run (without assistance) freely from one end to the other, thats all the fall you need mate (thats how we used to test for sufficient fall when putting similar pipes in on site) a golf ball because of its dimples wont just run away. Take the time and do it properly mate, in 12 months time when its been pissing down and your drains have backed up of pissy smelling liquid, you'll wish you had, once done you can forget it. Gaz_1989 9,539
Ok thanks. I think I will do this. Like you say more work now but can be forgotten forever and will always have drainage up there for whatever I build in the future if I decide to change my kennels. How easy/hard is it to tap into the pipe where the Grid is at the bottom? Cheers Gaz

Bootsha 1,306
find your sewer pipe, get a sthil saw with a stone blad on it, or even a 9"angle grinder, carefully cut a square hole in the crown of the sewer pipe ( or if you wanted to be real professional, build a small inconspicuous manhole type thing) as the last bit of your pipe, use an offset bent, its not a right angle so wont creat a hard corner for your waste to travel down, but will gently direct it with the flow of the existing pipe, marry it up to the sewer pipe, make a mix of concrete, and seal off the join of the two pipes carefully ensuring that little or no muck goes into the sewer pipe, sound complivated, but reallit isnt, you could do that with the help of a mate on a sat morning as long as you had the materials. Where the drain starts at the kennel end, put a prope drain with trap in there so no smells come back up from the sewers in to your kennels, job done. I have done it here, my kennels are some 50yds from my sess pit, i found the pipework coming from the house to it, tapped into that and baobs your uncle and all tha, trust me, you will be very glad you did it in a years time, 110%. And use a 6" pipe not a 4 if you can, that way you can flush the solids away as well, your binmen will thank you for it lol.
gonetoearth 5,144
Soak aways are not for foul water bud it will and up stinking over time just put a drain in to you kennel with a sump at the end with a bucket big enough to take you wash out the tip in to your nearest drain wash and keep. border lad 1,047
you have some good sound advice there, do it right once, and then you have No hassle afterward, and with all this rain you will dig that land with ease, one good day and you will have the job done with no fuss, have all materials on hand, before you start, and your job will be a goodun,
Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks for the advice lads. Especially thanks to bootsha. I'm gonna start digging my channel this week and find where I need to tap in to the mains. Cheers. Gaz
