Dear Ms Swann,

I am writing to voice my concern over WH Smith’s policy regarding the sale of shooting magazines to “under-age” children.

I am surprised a company of your size would blindly bow down to pressure from organizations such as Animal Aid without researching the matter thoroughly.

There is no minimum age to hold a Shotgun Certificate in the U.K, and it is certainly not 14. To me it seems ludicrous that someone under 14 can legally hold a Shotgun Certificate, legally go shooting, yet cannot buy a magazine to read about the sport they love.

If my son was under 14, I would just buy it for him, but more likely he would buy it himself from a shop that doesn’t impose silly restrictions on a publication that is completely legal to buy at any age at any other newsagent.

Your ban is not going to stop anyone of any age reading magazines like this, but will just stop people buying them from WH Smith, along with whatever else they might have bought in your shops.

I urge you to please read the poll in the Daily Telegraph http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/9606557/WH-Smith-bans-children-from-buying-shooting-magazines.html to see how strong public opinion is against this.

I look forward to re-visiting WH Smith once this pointless censorship has been removed.

Dear Sir/Madam

Having seen the recent article in the news, regarding WH Smith's decision to prevent young people from buying magazines related to the shooting sport, I would like to make it clear that I will no longer be a customer of WH Smiths. I have spent a minimum of £300 every year in your stores on books and magazines but I will not spend money with any organisation that supports such an attack on my own hobbies. I will also encourage friends and family to do the same.

Magazines such as Shooting Times, The field and Sporting Gun are not about glorifying guns, or violence, they routinely attempt to educate about the importance of showing respect to quarry species and discuss the importance of safety. In fact they are written to encourage all to get outside in the fresh air and enjoy the countryside with friends and family and not sit alone in front of an X Box or watching rubbish on the television which really do damage to the minds of children.

I really am appalled at how your company has allowed itself to become a pawn of a small number of small minded individuals with an agenda. Your founders were keen country sportsmen and this makes this all the more saddening.

Regards

This has just been sent.

Dear Ms Swann.

I am writing to you, to let you know my absolute fury, that WH Smiths have decided to ban under 14's from buying magazines such as the shooting times, as reported in the Telegraph yesterday.

I have two boys both under the age of 14, (8 and 11), and they both shoot with me, every weekend and at any other opportunity. As a sportsman and former gamekeeper, I know how vital it is to set the right example to children, and to put the knowledge and education at their finger tips. These magazines constantly have articles promoting the safe use of firearms, and this only sets in place a good example for children to follow.

Neither of my boys are that interested in video games, yet they can come into WH Smiths and buy gaming magazines, that depict violence and promote the killing of people in warfare, such as articles on Call Of Duty, in a highly graphic form.

One of my sons already has his own shotgun certificate and the other is in the process of getting one. The licensing officer that gave my eldest son the visit, said they encourage that, because it breeds responsibility into the child, knowing that they have to behave or they will have the certificate revoked. Your decision, flies in the face of that thought process, and sends out the wrong message to children and adults alike.

My children are not allowed to drive but they can buy car magazines. They are not allowed to drink alcohol but they can buy magazines on wines and spirits, your decision is flawed and morally wrong in so many ways.

As a father of two young boys, I spend a small amount of my income, but on a regular basis at WH Smiths, on books and more importantly stationary for school. I also buy my magazines, Shooting Times, the Field and Trout and Salmon, each week and month respectively from your stores.

I will wait a short period of time to see if this decision is reversed, and published, and then if it isnt, I will withdraw all my support to your chain of shops.

I look forward to your reply.

Kind Regard

This is what this country is becomeing ...I bought my young lad one of they replica shotguns for his 3rd birthday ....and when he started school my wife was pulled up by the headmaster that he had concerns that my son was saying he had his own gun and he was always out shooting ...my wife explained that the gun was a replica and was a training aid to teach him gun ettiquit and when he is old nough to use a firearm he will not be allowed to do so until he is 100% safe and that is exactly what this gun has done ...now 5 year old he is safer with a gun than a lot of adults ive been out with safety with a firearms is just second nature to him and in a few years he will be allowed the real thing .

Id rather he had a real gun out in the fresh air learnign about and respecting nature than sat inside in front of a game consell shooting people on a screen

Another group the governent don't want to upset. Now controlling what our kids read. A pastime that has spanned centuries. Taking a moral stance got kids lol while on the other hand selling them games that highlight headshots. They should say to them in a firm voice f**k OFF!
