Breeding pups

Recommended Posts

We all want tested parents that's the norm but what about tested owners seen a bloke on the colli x thread wanting advice on what to put to his dog on a forum who never seen the dog work or really no land he hunts. Do u think owners like that should be breeding with inexperience to this game. I no if I was sourcing a pup I wouldnt want it off someone just starting out, takes time to understand what qualities are truly needed and worthy of breeding from you don't just pick that up in a season or 2 what u guys think. Do u recon thats why theres so much shit about

yes people not knowing what qualitys they want in there dogs eg speed brains feet when breeding say for rabbits if your running a half collie greyhound you should be breeding pups that you think will preform better than the parents say the bitch lacks speed and turning abilty but still has the brain to pick a rabbits up left right and centre than id pick a good racy dog with eg good feet good length of leg and look like a capable animal but first want to see it working and if i think its a sutible dog to put to my bitch to add to the quality of the pups then id breed .

Breeding lurcher pups is a lottery...i've seen real quality dogs bred out of an oven door and a labrador ;) and a heap of shite out of top quality runners, there is NO guarantee when producing pups in this game..don't make a shite of difference if you've been in the game two years or fifty two years :hmm: ..if the lad thinks he has a bitch which he believes will produce something which will suit him (and not everyone else) then what's the problem? I seen his bitch and it looks real nice, why not have a pup out of her and rather one out of a Hancock (kennel warrior) ..i know where i'd rather get a pup from and it wouldn't be from and owld tramp who knows jack shit about hunting and has been churning pups out since dinosaurs walked the earth :whistling: ... just my opinion on the matter :tongue2: ..ATB Andy. :victory:

See were u comin from but you've made an easy comparison. With hancock im talking of working dog men forget about the hancock types they aint even worth the breath . Heres another one my mate has has a litter(in theory this is) hes only had his first dog one season and only been in the game that long then you got you for example been in the game longer then I probably been alive ( joke) in those extra years you would of seen and done things with dogs and probably seen the good with the bad wouldnt u think u were in a better position to know if a dogs worth breeding from then say the first season lad. I agree to extent of being lottery but lines and grafted dogs gotta count for sonething other wise why bother with the minshaw line for so long surely you'd have just as much luck else where??????????

Comparing to Hancock is no argument.

Working dogs should be bred from working dogs.

Obviously at some point pure collie was required to start off the lines. But not now. Why breed from a non working non hunting collie to produce Half crosses when there are loads of grafting half crosses already out there?

I've had dogs out of Minshaw lines that were NOT worth a toss Paul and seen plenty more as bad if not worse bred out of the best of the strain..i've had and seen dogs out of lord knows what that i would class as very good dogs indeed but i'm a sucker for no change lol so i'll stick to what i know :icon_redface: ..YES i'd always try for best x best if possible but it doesn't guarantee success...the best dog i've personally ever owned was out of a pet collie,he was the only one in the whole litter that ever seen a rabbit..would the other's of been as good if not better?..who knows?...there are no certainties when it comes to breeding, just look racehorses and greyhounds..most have champions in their bloodlines but only a minority reach the pinnacle of their spheres  ..be lucky because in this game it can mean alot  ..ATB Andy. ;)

when both parents could do there job, but No guarantees,

Dumb reply :-)

Why do you need a half cross? Why not just cross 2 working dogs with a good chunk of collie in them?

Everyone try's to complicate breeding dogs and have half of this and quarter of that.

Gareth, you can never reproduce a first cross, put say 2 half x beddy greyhounds together and you could end up with a 26 inch dog instead of 22,23 that's why people like first crosses because you know what size you'll get, the next mating you don't know. That's why.

Im out of my depth here, never bred a litter of pups. But surely you would get a more even litter from 2 half crosses than from a 20" collie and a 28" greyhound? No?
