old dog 210
Start of the season is here again,i've 7 first year hounds to enter, one of them from over the water, been out a few times this year with them and all have entered easily,im very pleased with them, the scent hasn't been that clever over the last few week's so this week i thought i'd drop them into a deep old valley with plenty of cover in it,on saying that the first bit of cover was a large patch of grassland,as soon they entered the drag was away, you could'nt of asked for better, good music first thing in the morning, hounds lefted there and droped down into the valley as was the plan, going down the left hand side of the valley for quite a way turning right handed and coming back up the other side, hounds in full cry all the time,it then came over the cb lurcher's away ,having to make some ground up first, but accounting for the drag, hounds were still going well hunting a different drag they had come back up from where we first started going out across the fields heading back towards the village, these fields were full of SHEEP they were everywhere, hounds hunted over 7-8 fields all full of sheep, into the village through the school grounds across the play park up the road and back across farm land again, coming back around in a large circle putting the drag to ground in a wide hedge,by the time i got there hounds had dug alot away there was about 12 holes with an average of 2 hounds in each hole, considering scent wasn't that great hounds had done well with the amount of smelly sheep that was running about the place to spoil the scent,it wasn't the place for the faint of heart, blow of the horn and a call on the cb and the terrier was on his way ,i had a young terrier with me 14 months old ,so i left him off to see what he would do ,he hasn't been around holes before,so time to shine, but with some of the holes being blocked with the hounds digging, hounds digging around him ,and hounds calling around him ,it was a bit overall for him to take in ,so i put hounds up the bank ,as he went to have another nose the drag bolted, away they went across the field the drag just making the fence, from where i was standing it looked like they had caught him,he made that bit of ground and ran back into the valley hounds hunted him for about 15 minutes losing him in the thick cover, another 2 was accounted for later on in the day,it was 4.30pm so i decided to call it a day, most of the boys had gone back to the farm for tea, i was 1 hound short a little welsh bitch called dotty, two of the boys stayed there with me waiting for her to come back ,the rest of the hounds sitting in the field behind us,next thing she started calling a few little barks, hounds picking they're heads up but staying behind me ok,then she started screaming,i had no chance they were over the fence and away the music was brilliant, the further down the valley they were going the louder it was getting it seem'ed ages but they hunted it for about 20 minutes, catching him a good way down the valley,if the rest of the season goes like today i'll be a happy man,atb od after today, flat out in the trailer 13 Quote Link to post
