Why should your preparation change apart from checking they have access to fresh clean water ?. if there in a clean draught free hutch what needs to change ?.

Good idea...will head to my nearest pound shop to see if they have any.

put a couple socks over the bottles ,...lot less hastle

Donkey jackets are the way to go, until all your ferrets look like miners from the 80's!

Straw is a good bed, but have found ticks amongst it from time to time, hay does flatten and hold damp.

Shavings and old clothes seem to make great beds for ferrets.

used straw in the past till went out one morning and there was a bit sticking in the corner of the ferrets eye just a freak accident i think. Then went on to blankets and found shit in there bed she had caught claws in blanket. shreaded paper from now on which i get from office at work.

so whats everybodys preperation for this winter?

gutted the hutch out. stripped all the t shirts (bedding) out and replaced it with hay.

what would you reccomend for bedding? dont mind tshirts but i just change it up every now and then. fancied straw or hay but hay was what i had readily available to me so used that.

whats best. straw or hay?

got a couple of water bottle covers this time as last year i used bubblewrap around the bottles.

whats your views?

go to the local farm and pick up a bale of barley straw ferrets love it and so do the chickens. extra water bottles on list for this week as the never ending battle against frozen/unfrozen water begins - switch ferrets onto soaked ferret biscuits as i can help with water intake and it heats there food up when its freezing cold.put a new top on the ferret hutch to help shield them from driving rain and the rest is up to them - mine seem hardy enough got through the last few cold winters and it didnt seem to bother them

The first thing to freeze is the spout, as steel is an excellent conductor of temperature. It's pointless covering the bottle if the ferrets can't get to the unfrozen water because the ball is stuck and the spout is crammed with ice.

I've got a second set of bottles which I keep in the house. They get swapped before work, after work and before bed. Considering they only cost a couple of quid it's a no-brainer.
