Out today at another thick hedge.

Recommended Posts

Went out today to meet up with a good friend and give him a hand clearing a tough hedge that bordered a field of newly planted grass on one of his permissions, that was getting a bit of attention from coneys.

Got up early doors and did my round of the birds, which took longer than i had expected, went home, loaded the Mrs, the dog and a couple of ferrets into the car and went to pick up John, his step daughter Caitlin and his two dogs. After getting held up and a slow start, we were on our way, and soon enough (but some what late) we met up with Brian, and got to having a look at the hedge in question.

It was thick.

Unfortunatly due to our lateness, after showing us the hedge, Brian had to shoot off to do some work, and left us to it. We netted up a section of the hedge, from one end, up to a dividing oak tree. And soon enough tipped in the ferrets. After a slow start, the rabbits started to bolt, with the dogs excited at first, settling down to work well. It took a while, but eventually we evicted the eight occupying rabbits, with everything accounted for in the nets.

As we were picking up, we had a visit from the neighbouring land owner, who asked us to not do the remainder of the boundry hedge that day (to do with a pshycotic dog he owns who was eyeing up ours), but gave us his number, and permission to return and do it, a long with the rest of the farm from next week.

With the rest of our day slightly scuppered, but not wishing to argue, considering we had just gained permission on a good property riddled with rabbits, we decamped to another part of the original farm, which also bordered the newly planted grass. Unfortunatly this area had suffered some flooding so the best warrens were not in use, with the rabbotst aking shelter in the nearby maize. Soon enough though, we got a decent mark, and netted up another tough section of hedge, which again took a long time. Eventually done, we dropped the jills in, and waited. Eventually a couple hit the nets, and then a couple skipped nets, that caught on a combination of thick cover and old barbed wire, but both were driven back to ground (and into nets) by the dogs. The second, saw finn sunk to his tail in a hole, drawing it out by the legs, he's a dedicated little shit.

After a while of no movement and no sign of the ferrets we got out the disco carrot, and had a look, sure enough both ferrets were at the same spot a couple of feet down. I sunk the spade in and suddenly heard the rumbling of two rabbits on the move, the first hit a net next to me and the second didnt make it that far, as he was pinned in the mouth of the hole by two irrate ferrets

So six from that warren, and with not really much more to do, today, due to various factors, we headed back toward the car, letting the dogs cast about. As we got to the car, they marked another very short hedge section with a half dozen holes either side, easier netting up this time, so it was done quickly.

In went the ferrets and pretty much instantly i heard a squeal, marked at half a foot, took the soil off to reveal a quarter grown rabbit. Then another of the same size popped out of a bolt hole and was snatched by finn. Moments later john was digging out a third the other side of the hedge, again only about half a foot down. The ferrets however stayed down. Assuming another small one, i climbed into the hedge where they had now settled again and prepared to lift the soil again. Suddenly a rabbit hit the net next to me, which i grabbed, as i lifted it, a second rabbit exploded out of the same hole. Luckily Finn had come to see if i needed a hand with the first rabbit and was hit square in the chops by the second  despite the suprise he managed to shut his mouth and hold onto the rabbit.

So that was us done, with 16 adults and 3 bite-size bunnies. Another good day, if shorter than normal, and nice to be out with the girls, who took a side of the hedge between them, netted up, worked the dogs, dealt with rabbits etc. Can't fault them
