martin 332
Put a torch behind the nail and you will be able to see the quick inside,do not cut the quick go a few mm longer and you can rub them down a bit more with a bit of sandpaper. Martin Quote Link to post
Adam_Chuck 256
Plenty of road work keep the nails short Quote Link to post
AirgunGuy 362
My Weimaraner has clear nails so hers are easy to clip as i can see the quick but my GSP and Whippet both have black nails so i only nip the tips off when they get a bit long...probably once a month or so. If you can't see the quick, don't be tempted to take off too much as there's a lot of nerves in there and you'll get a yelp and a lot of blood and the dog will not let you near them again Edited October 6, 2012 by AirgunGuy Quote Link to post
wilt 112
you can get clippers with a plate at the back so you just take off the right amount Quote Link to post
Tiny 7 1,694
Start small fellah, Just nip the ends of and then file/sand them down abit, And the quick of the nail with start strinking away from the tip and in a week time do the same again just the tips and file/sand down and just keep on top of it, Road work does help but if like me and your straight from the house too the feilds then they really dont get a chance on the road to wear them down.. bracken boy 584
black nails can be a pain but never had a problem so far, a wee clip and plenty of road work, a month later should be fine Quote Link to post
optimus 447
Dark claws always a problem. Clip what you can if you cant see root. Clean clip as ragged nails can splinter & file or sand edges. Asda do a wee hand held sander for rubbing down filler etc, just a few pounds & use fine sandpaper to round edges. roadwork, being loose on slabs round back helps keep them trim. Long nails may mean dog isnt used to handling feet so best to go easy at 1st. Good luck Quote Link to post
