The one 8,513
I do a farm where theres a big ledge with four sandy burrows on it covering 100 yards i net the four burrows up put the ferrets in and there that deep i have a cuppa sitting on the box before the first rabbits bolt . before i got my locator i would of walked past these ,as they go off the box with a fifteen foot locator the box is handy for showing your ferrets still in the burrow and moving about . As its a horse farm the owner doesn't like digging anyway Quote Link to post
rob190364 2,594
You could probably get away with not using collars most of the time but you'd be leaving dead rabbits underground a lot, that would do my head in! The other big advantage of a locator is when the ferret hasn't reappeared for a while you have the peace of mind in knowing that you ferret hasn't come out of a hole on the other side of a wall/hedge etc. and gone wandering off, and you can check it's still moving about the warren rather than being stationary. My ferret comes out of the warren if I whistle but if it's still moving around underground the chances are it's still chasing a rabbit so why would you want to be whistling at the entrance. IMO you could go ferreting without locators, and with a bit of patience and careful choice of warrens to work you probably would never lose a ferret....but for the sake of a hundred quid on a second hand locator and collar why compromise your ferreting so much by not having one? I think a lot of the time some of the old timers refuse to get them because they're stuck in there ways, the bottom line is they make your life a hell of a lot easier and put more rabbits in the bag, no one can argue with that! The one 8,513
But you cant be certain your leaving dead rabbits underground , i remember lamping a new permission and shooting rabbits with bare behinds turns out the guy that was ferreting it didn't have a locator and his ferrets where bottling them up and no killing them just scratching away at them . And i think once a rabbit gets away with sitting tight in a dead end once they wont bolt they will try to sit tight again Quote Link to post
Guest vin
spent a lot of time waiting with cold feet in my youth. . .learned the hard way..quiet approach..silent netting up..quick dispatch of any bolters and 9/10 you were ok...but it never always goes to plan. Best thing ever invented for ferreting was the deben locator...although my mate had a tranny radio and a collar. Quote Link to post
