The one 8,487
I can remember going ferreting before locators and i was always left at the burrow to wait till the ferret came out them i had to catch up with my dad and uncles when i got the ferret . I was never so glad to get a locator and two collars for my birthday . I dont know how some folk would cope with out a locator my cousin waits barely five minutes and if nothings happening he's out with the box and the spades on the go  Quote Link to post

The one 8,487
Aye as i cant see smoke penetrating down fifteen foot and if the ferrets stuck behind a rabbit you could kill it with smoke inhalation Quote Link to post
pipa 299
the ferret dug round it done it before or ill just dig last knownplace and listen but not had to do that Wtf? You say in you're 1st comment that you never dug to a ferret, but then you say the ferret dug round a dead rabbit before? How do you know this if you ain't dug down? Have you got magic glasses that sees under ground? And I have had some ferrets over the yrs but never 1 that came to whistle while it was in natural kill mode? Quote Link to post
BS40liam 203
I havnt got a locator at present but am saving up so will have one VERY soon (bills come 1st I'm affraid) I've been lucky the last few weeks I've been out as most of the sets I do are between 3-7 holes so its not to bad BUT! God forbid if I had a ferret lay up and no collar on I'd have to wait for hours I can only presume, so can't wait untill I get a locator....clearly ferrets was easy to come by back then and if one was lost, one was easily replaced! The one 8,487
We used a bit of barb wire or a bramble with all the thorns removed apart from the last six inches which was fine if the ferret showed at a hole if it didn't you had a long wait till night time and you blocked the holes and came back the next day Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
People treasured half hearted ferrets before locaters, ones that lacked commitment, that skimmed off the easy bolted and wouldn't stick on the stubborn. Its quite funny knowing how many people with a locater, still treasure a half hearted ferret over a true grafter, just because they refuse to dig a couple of feet. There's a lot of satisfaction to be taken in knowing you have totally cleared a warren, of live and dead rabbits. 4 Quote Link to post
reddawn 2,173
farmer once told me after i knocked his door for permission that a few guys had ferreted his open burys the day before an after they had lifted there nets he wandered over to see how they had done, he said they showed him 3 bunnys an said they was comin back next week, he said they all walked across the field an 1 guy said he had left his knife, as he started walking back 2 bunnys come oot an hole they had just lifted a net off, i assured the farmer i had a hob that would not leave anything alive in his warrens aslong as i could dig, then i assured him i would backfill all holes, i went back next day an him an his grandson come an watched me ferret, was around 4 years ago now, an i still got that permission now, an he lets me use his quad bke to trott me dogs around fields on the nites i wont be lamping an do what ever else i want on his land 1 Quote Link to post
