Marvin 193
How did people who went ferreting work their stinkers without locators before they were invented ??? Quote Link to post
Tug 168
Broke their teeth so they couldn't kill, muzzled them, used a line that could get wrapped around roots and strangle them, lost ferrets (like a lot still do today), kept quiet so the rabbits bolted easier. Quote Link to post
fitchet 788
Wooden see saw traps baited with rabbit liver ferret box left outside holes . . . . Alot of people will say liner ferrets. Ive tried this method just out of curiousity ( the ferret still had a locater collor on aswell as the line ) it is fecking hard work and imo not a method you could use routinely. Quote Link to post
tegater 789
A lot of waiting around for the ferrets to come out, and I think that is why I still prefer jills to hobs, although they both have their place. Alot of squeeking and getting the smell of rabbit guts to blow through the warren to tempt them out. Occasional use of hob with a line. I never muzzled or snapped teeth. The finders are a great tool, but everythong else just used to be part of ferreting for me and I put up with it! Quote Link to post

kanny 21,132
i dont do any ferreting now days but did alot in my teens we would just run them free and if they laid up we would just block the set up and return the next day with a bit of liver. 95% of the time you would get your ferret back and if you didnt there was always plenty more in the box. in those days there was no such thing as a pet ferret they was all workers meaning workers were always bred to workers and any that didnt got the spade so any ferret you got had a better chance of being a decent worker so if you lost one it was no big deal. Guest cookiemonsterandmerlin
Once we done a a 3 holer on the oxfordshire sand it was 230 thought nice easy one 10 hours later still no show the old mini van across the field sat there all night and the little begger popped up as nowt had happen way before we had collars that sand was a soft as shit and a danger to dig to ferts as it would collaspe and suffocated the ferts . Never lossed a fert every even before locators and done some rye old places the worst was old elm root warrens with stops spreading out 20 yeards following the dead root systems ,you see folk doing the chicken dance thinking he cant be that far out in the field and then feck me knock knock and the joy of knowing your little worker is within grasp . Best out of one them stops 15 and the fert was tucked behind the 5th one and 10 up the front with having the other loose ferts working the 5 coneys behind him. Happy days Cookie Quote Link to post
