Guest Leveller
My first lurcher wasn't actually mine growing up in a small town surrounded by farms and scrubland there was plenty to go at as kids we'd all muck about nesting, building camps, bmxing etc and would quite often be there with older lads who had motorbikes, girlfriends and cider. They would have tales about a local hardman who I'll refer to as 'G' and how he would go poaching at night with his Lurchers, I'd seen G's dogs about all the time (but I just thought they were greyhounds) they were proper latchkey dogs that weren't uncommon in the eighties, they'd be turfed out the house in the morning and wander around all day visiting butcher shops for scraps, sowing their seed wherever they like and dodging the odd car on their travels and they'd return to the house at night every night without fail. I guess I'd of been about nine or ten when the desire to poach was too great. I'd always been around hounds, hunting, fishing and ferrets but this was different this was a bit naughty, I could even get a tough guy reputation. I would wear a dog lead around my waist like a belt and spend the school holidays finding the dog and then scratching around. The dog was easy to catch, quite friendly and we spent so many days out together then I'd return the dog very close to it's house let it off the lead and it would make for home. I think it probably only caught about two rabbits the whole time I was out with it but they were very happy days for a carefree kid and the seed was planted back then. 'G' was a proper old school hardman and I remember seeing him at a gamefair once with his face all busted up after a fight and in my strange young easily impressionable eyes this was what I was to apsire to be, so the association between rogue and running dog made it even more exciting. He went on the run with a shotgun in November of 1987 and was shot dead by police marksman and I never have found out what happened to the dogs but being the small world that it is one of his old mates and the chap who actually bred "my" dog is on this site. So my first dog belonged to somebody else and my motives when first entering the world of lurchers were less than honourable but the important thing is I learned some big lessons early on about role models and I owe so much to those dogs back then and also a lot to 'G' although whether he was ever aware of what I did or not I'll never know............................... 1 Quote Link to post

Carraghs Gem 1,675
My first lurcher wasnt a lurcher but an ex coursing greyhound that had fallen on hard times and was living in a kennel made of 2 pallets tied up 24/7 & fed on bread and milk, well I knew she had a reputation as a cat killer but I still brought her home with me Well we named her boots, she mustve been at least 10yr old and I immediately learnt my lesson that she had to be kept chained as the minute she got a chance she was out roaming looking for cats, she was a belter of a rabbit dog although hard mouthed, I never tried her with any other quarry although in retrospect I believe she would have taken fox as well No pics im afraid Quote Link to post
