salukixgrey 779
Just got in great night for it 2nite, my young dog took 3 from 3 big rabbits and my mates young bitch took 2 from 3, was unlucky 2 miss the third. I had a few problems with my dog first few times he was out he missed a big rabbit and went on a mission but after a few kills he seems to have grown out of it, his first few kills he seemed very possesive over didn't want me to have it he did it with first kill 2nite, but after that ok. I don't really run permission and the way things are a dog that won't come back will end up getting shot or get you locked up, got rid of a good killing bitch not so long ago cause to head strong on walks she would walk 2 heal, but when she got out she changed, if she missed she would want to hunt up learly left her a few times. well done mate sounds like a good nyt.but ye finished up very early didnt ye went at half 9 n back bout 12 two hours, was gunna run again but my dog re opened a cut on his stopper on a track, and my mates is only a little saluki whippet 15 months and had a long one tested her abit, so we come back only had the two out cause my bitch come in season yesterday and mine and my mates dog don't get one. You not out 2nite? Quote Link to post

Tyla 3,179
As has been said, one dog at a time and get the basic training sorted first. Theres a good post on here somewhere about training a lamping dog, well worth searching and having a read. Quote Link to post

old school 531
Not sure pal sticker cum off crackin dogs dranny, love the wee whippet.... as said before take one at a time out from now on!! the old hands often frown upon it but i got myself a canicolm training collar and it was priceless when i was training the track greyhounds i had on the lamp!! without it my nights were spent begging and chasing them round the fields but after one night wearing the collar they were sorted!! it was only a couple of nights before i had them walkin beside me without the need of the collars!! but i still like using it when i'm lampin them both together because when entering a new field sometimes they just look at each other and think, "we'l ditch this twat" and off they go totally deaf and only return lookin all apologically after they'v scared everything off lol!! you can buy really cheap training collars off ebay for about 40 quid, i'm not sure what theyr like tho?? IMO, if they were good then in your case, it would be money well spent!! and forgot to ask, what clu light have you got?? i have the blaserlite and the laserlite with the work light and hinged filter on them!! theyre great :-) Quote Link to post

poacher28 120
go back to basics, take one dog out at a time and work on recall, good recall is a must, i can honestly say i hate stuborn dogs that wont come when called or whistled, especialy if your somewere you shouldnt be. cook up some chiken, put it in your pocket and reward the dog once your satisfied with its recall. keep on with this untill its drumed into the dogs head, that every time you give a short whistle or name call its back at your side with out thinking about it. like i say, its the most important thing to my self having a lurcher with a1 recall, sit, stay .. and all that milarky comes at a later date. and there aint nothing wrong with the lamp your using, i use a clulite my self have done for years, its not the lamp that will catch you stuff mate belive me, i use a head torch on a few places i shouldnt be, bit or reflective metiral tied to the dogs collar so you know where she is once shes made a catch, all you need, i dont see the need in drawing attention to your self with the big lamps. all the best with your dogs mate, happy hunting Quote Link to post
morton 5,368
What skills make a good lamping dog? Ill pass all the posts, ive seen crap bred dogs make outstanding lampers on bunny,s,when the situation suited them, short grass,no obstacles,a bunny every 20 yds.easier to miss a catch than come to terms.lamping is the easiest of disciplines for the average lurcher,a poor daytime potfiller will bag up at night. So what makes a good lamping dog?,easy,a good lamper with a dog.
