Hedges

yeah don't take it on on your own. you'll end up in one hell of a mess. ferrets every were nets all over the place. you'll need two quick set long nets, two gate nets, three or four ferrets and a friend.

run the long nets out parallel up the hedge

cut a small gap in the hedge (JUST BIG ENOUGH TO WORK IN)

connect the two nets together with gate nets(so that you have surrounded the holes)

put in the ferrets

wait ( one man each side)

repeat all the way down the hedge

good luck mate atb RAW

Sometimes you've just got to get in and under those hedges.

What we do is run a 20 yard hemp net at the end of end warren with it U shape facing each other to stop them running around it make sure plenty of bag as alot of rabbits are lossed due to bouncing of the net back into the warren

Well I agree cookie but If there's warrens in the middle of the field they might be more inclined to?

Most warrens today in open fields are just night time stops I have found few warrens even large ones hold good numbers always ran the net round the open one first bolted them then onto the hedges .

I have two good section of lovely chalk downland warrens where there soley in open and due to terrain purley purse nets as there in coombes and leathal to the dogs with 500 foot near virtical drops

i can only talk from my experience and will agree that most will run the hedge but after ferreting an orchard last season i had to change my mind. nearly every rabbit we bolted headed for open ground. i just wanted the lad to have all bases covered so he could enjoy his day out. atb RAW

What cookie says is almost correct most will run the hedge,,,, however some will cross a field especially if there's a hedge close on the other side,,,, also some rabbits bolt out in to the field,, go about 10 meters befor doubling back in a semi circle ,, so a net running parrelel will catch these,,,, but I prefer to keep the net running parrelel fairly close to the hedge.

Another good tip , is to put purse nets on the run, that goes up the inside of the hedge, have a good look under the hedge you should see a well trodden path,,, usually right in the middle of the hedge,, connecting the bury your on to other burns either side

Brilliant advice lads, some of the hedges I am netting up don't have an end to them.. if you get what I mean. So would you just put the net straight through a well ran tunnel in the hedge?

Can't thank you lot enough for the response.

Cracking info. Nath

I did a bury this morning that runs about 60 yards thick with nettles and brambles,Netted 8 holes that were out in the field caught 3 in the purse nets the other 6 were caught by the long net as they bolted out of the hedge to run across the field.Always loop my long nets out from the hedge to run parallel and catch plenty.I would lose plenty if i only used long nets on the ends of burys.
