Hosie1407 3
Looking for some advice guys. Recently had a permission on a lot of land where my sister stables her horses. It's swarming with rabbits, went for a walk around the land yesterday.. seen at least 200 bunnies, no exaggeration, but most are in the hedges. There are a few burrows out in the open but not as many rabbits in them - makes sense. The hedges are still thick and having trouble covering every hole. What's the best thing me to do or invest in? Looking forward to some replies Nath Quote Link to post
bobcullen79 1,495
Longnets each side or all the way round it. Then section the hedge with stopnets going through the hedge, to break it into smaller pieces. Start from one end to the other. Its easier with a few people, one each side of the hedge and one to work the stopnets. Or even better, a dog... Quote Link to post
Hosie1407 3
So you'd section the hedge off every 10 meters or so with stop nets? Cheers for your advice Quote Link to post
Jamie m 668
Whilst the covers there that's where they will be in winter they will be in all the holes Quote Link to post
bobcullen79 1,495
Yeah, sounds about right. All depends on the amount of kit you have/carry really. You could put down some purse nets too. Quote Link to post
Hosie1407 3
You think the bunnies will spread around when the hedges thin down and go into the middle of the field? Quote Link to post
bobcullen79 1,495
Whilst the covers there that's where they will be in winter they will be in all the holes I dont know what you mean? We were ferreting like this a few weeks back and we had about a 100 ferreting this way for pest control. Ive also had a few other bunnys since ferreting whilst the cover is up..... Quote Link to post
ferret333 745
get a lurcher haha Quote Link to post
bobcullen79 1,495
Why wait for them to disperse? If you want rid, as its near stables, get them now while you know where there are, cos once you have ferreted a few times, the few loose stragglers will become hard to get to bolt, and you will be laying nets for nothing. I'm with Bob at least a two man job if its a solid hedge, one on each side moving the nets up Quote Link to post
bobcullen79 1,495
You think the bunnies will spread around when the hedges thin down and go into the middle of the field? They wont normally move out into the middle unless theres already a bury there. Rabbits prefer some cover. Quote Link to post
bobcullen79 1,495
For the price Bisley charge for 4z stopnets, your probably better getting some para cord and sheet neeting and make your own.. Try advanced netting, you have to phone and ask for it tho. Quote Link to post
foxdigger13 114
Well if there was a few gaps in the hedge I would run a few stop nets or short trammel nets through them, then hang poke nets on any rabbit runs in the hedge, and also purse net any open or easily acessable holes and try and have a dog handy, also If working alone I would probably only drop 1 or 2 ferrets in so that the rabbits aren't bolting everywhere, Cheers fd.
