A mix of lurcher to lurcher breeding devoid of saluki a consistent hare killer in the 70s they were loads more like this dog without saluki blood that could catch hares regular and consistant years a

i ran lurchers on hare no salukie in there breeding on the fens and moorland and round cheshire the dogs we used were deerhound based but were only good for 3/4 runs and that is slipping at no more than 25 yards we had some great times but soon got in to the salukie cross there the best dog for coursing hare diffrent class atb

3/4 greyhound X deerhound would still be my choice for day work, and ive had all sorts of cross,s includeing collies, good feet, eyes, coat and stamina, most dogs are fast enough in a straight line, but hares dont run in straight lines, to make a good hare dog it needs to be run on them most days, not only for experiance but they need to be rearly fit. i always used to carry a small container of water with me and squirt a small amount into the dogs mouth after a run, supprising how much good a drop of water did the dog, another good tip is to remember where this years suger beet fields are because if we get a rearly hard winter the hares will be on the old beet fields digging up missed beets  , buster.

I have had a few good collie crosses, but the best was out first cross bitch put back to a 3/4grey 1/4 collie dog, genuine he had it all for edible that is,

brain, stamina, pace, and he could use his gearbox, and then he would get right down low and start working the Hare from his shoulders, the Hare could not turn bang it was over, he took Hares on all types of Land from plough, heather, tattie fields, turnip fields, he was an ace he came out with rabbit, Hare, or pheasant, jump a six foot stone wall carrying a 7lb Hare, stood 26" weighed around 65lb, I was working overseas at the time, (( africa, I sold the dog, not for a lot of money, to a so called mate that on condition when I come back, I get a pup from him, (((( never got a pup, he said he never bred him and then the dog got stolen, thats what the guy said to me,

There allways was, (and still is), plenty of crosses, types, without Saluki in them, that could take hares. Thing was, these dogs were used as "allrounders", whereas the Saluki Hybrids were, MAINLY, bred for the specific purpose of hare coursing. If coursing is your main or only work, then get a well bred Saluki type. If you want more of an "allrounder", then there are other types that are more suitable, but still more than capable of taking hares regularly. By the way. not every Saluki type turns out to be a great hare dog; just like other crosses, there is plenty that don't make the grade; but, by and large, I'd say if it's a hare dog you want, then go for a Saluki type from proven breeding !!

Cheers.

Worked with an old boy years ago. He had a farm on Altcar and was a massive coursing enthusiast in the 60's and 70's. He always said Deerhound crosses were the best on that ground and thats what he kept, though he'd seen a few greyhoundy lurchers do well. Poor bugger lost his tennancy due to his hare chasing ways.
