a friend of mine had a whippet grey x deer grey years ago which took hares week in week out in numbers and he still rates this dog as one of his best. he was sat waiting one morning for some lads to turn up to match him, they was very late so he slipped the dog on 2 with 2 kills then lads turned up so he still run match and won. this dog is the great and great great grand father the dogs he and i have now!

Interesting topic.

When people are talking about non saluki hybrids killing daytime hares, are we talking the odd hare before the new year or seriously competing with proper hare dogs taking say 2 from a few courses in a Janurary morning? I think most lurchers can knock the odd hare over while mooching about but how many can you take out EVERY Sunday morning and garuntee to come back with a hare for tea?

Mine used to take them all winter, i know what your talking about though, all the easy hares have gone by january, leaving only the best of the best. I used to go to a place called Wentbridge in Yorkshire [just off the A1] in late winter, some of the Ponty/Cass lads will know were i mean, there were no easy hares up there, good place to run 2 dogs for a shilling on the outcome and i ran him against Saluki cross,s. I also used to run mine on the first nights snow to fill the freezer, not very sporting i know but needs must, anyway i,ve got a couple of pics here from 1982, bad winter, when we picked up 13 Hares in 2 hours, couldnt carry them home so i buried them in the snow and went back for them the next day, buster. PS i only look like a kid. Edited by buster gonads

100_0327.jpg Both these dogs could catch hares single handed regular although [bANNED TEXT] doubled up they were even more deadly they were also handy lamp dogs as i have found most dogs that are consistant hare catchers lamping rabbits usually comes easey to them.
