Rabbit hunting

Hi, are you new to Airgunning or just to hunting?

If the former, best advice is paper punching at various ranges until you are getting sub 1inch groups out to 35 yards.

Then come back and ask for advice on field craft and sniping over warrens etc...

If you're gonna shoot them it's much easier, i think, to hunt them at night with the lamp. My method is to walk 30 yards, have a 360 shine around with a red lamp. If nothing, turn the lamp off then walk another 30 yards, shine the lamp. If i see 1 i turn the lamp off immediately, get into position ie within range, rifle on sticks and aiming in the direction of the rabbit, put the scope mounted lamp on and take the shot. I use a red LED Ultrafire torch for scanning. It's not too powerful that it spooks the rabbits but it can pick up their eyes out to 60 yards no probs. The scope mounted lamp is a more powerful white beam Ultrafire that blinds them and, i think, helps to stop them running off. Most of the time it clamps them giving me a good chance of a kill

You must practice, practice, practice your shooting and ranges estimation if you don't have a range finder, then once adept at that comes the stalking skills don't think you can just walk to say 30 yards from a Rabbit and shoot it. It takes a certain amount of skill to stalk, you must determine wind direction even the slightest breeze in the wrong direction and the quarry will pick your scent up, slightest vibration from your walking they will pick it up, there's lots lots more involved all this as to be practiced before making a shot on live quarry: Dave

My permissions are more suited to shooting at night as they're golf courses and areas where there are people about during daylight hours. They're guaranteed to be there at night as it's the only time they can get peace to feed...other than when i'm about with the rifle of course

practice alot on paper targets and when you think your good enough and your getting tight groups practice some more, then get yourself down to your permission (without your rifle) and have a good look around, practice stalking get to know your permission and see whats coming from where and what sort of times they are there to give you the best results for when you do hunt live quarry, also when you do shoot live quarry if you have any doubts about the shot dont take it that animal will be there another day, this way you wont risk just wounding it.

Only take head shoots, never body shoots you will just wound. Lots of paper first. The hardest bit is getting the range dialed into your brain. Lots of guessing how far trees, fences are and then paceing out helped me....
