desertdog 149
took a trip up to melton mowbray market last week, thought id have a look at the ferrets, and there were some decent ferts there,i had know idea of what they,d fetch under the hammer, when they came to selling i could,nt believe how much they went for, hobs from £2-£4.00, and jills not fetching much more, after youv,ve fed the young uns, who will eat you out house and home, surely you, be wanting at least a tenner each, im out with the gun every day for ferret food, rabbits were,nt fetching much either, but im told the price of them does go up, but is it really worth rearing a lot of ferts to get nothing for them, after they take commision, cant be a lot left, a fella up there puts in ferret boxes, and they are well made, but so cheap, i got one £7.00, i really dont get how they can make these for that, id be very disapointed, very cheap for some one setting up,cheap nets cheap ferts, and a box, i was at quy show this year and the fella there was asking £15-20 for ferts and selling them, someone has put a lot of time in to their livestock and not been rewarded very well for it. pretty sad, i think the humble ferret has had a bad lot over the years for the pleasure and food they provide us with. bobcullen79 1,495
Same down this end, some guy I know said he was at auction and fellas were bidding a £1 on a ferret and box, then dumping the ferrets before even leaving. Out of order. Quote Link to post
R.A.W 1,987
that's why i didn't breed my jills this year. i only end up giving most away then having them back when peoples kids get feed up. i hope people that are new to this game read this and learn that it's not as easy as they think to make money from ferrets Quote Link to post
Carraghs Gem 1,675
whenever I get over to uk I will get my stinkers there... Save me a fortune that would. Quote Link to post

The one 8,479
Thats why when i breed mine they go to mates for free and i get kits off of them another year Quote Link to post
sam007 34
I have not bred any ferrets for at least 40 years I have never paid for a ferret. There are too many bred every year I feel that ferrets are treated by some people as if that are disposable In some ways I wish ferrets should cost £100 that would make people consider their welfare unfortunately it would mean there would be more breeding for money. It is a catch 22 My ferrets are with me till they end their life and are treated as my dogs , working pets . Sam 2 Quote Link to post
BS40liam 203
Ferrets in cadbury garden centre in bristol are going for mega money! 45 quid for a polecat and 75 quid for silvers! Its a effin joke. Quote Link to post
reddawn 2,173
fur an feather is same, some times of year they cost a bomb, an other they are pittance, shame really, my kitts will never leave me, unless they go to a ferretin buddy Quote Link to post
Tug 168
I've never paid for a ferret, I've never asked for money for a kit. Auctions are for peddlers to sell and mugs to buy. 2 Quote Link to post
Jamie m 668
I bred one litter this year only 4 in the litter I kept two jills to bolster the team and a hob. Feckin thing : ) , I may regret that come spring when I'm knocking up a new hutch lol , but going to put him over my mates good Jill , don't think I will breed next year unless folk ask me for kits , so long as they ask about Easter and not august . desertdog 149
mine wont be goin to melton, i have 10 young, and although they eat well , i dont mind,, i was there agin today, ferts making from £3.oo to £8.oo and the poor bloke who puts the carrying boxes, put his reserve at £3.00, i agree they should be given to mates and thats what i do, i gave a jill in young to my mate, he kept them and gave me the jill back, one jill in there today made £16.00, looked like a euro poley, and there looked to be a few after it, rabbit nets £20, ferret box, a treble £8.00, for all the hunting i do with me pugs, they owe me nothing, would,nt be without them. i had a good morning yesterday with a couple of young uns and the jill, ten bunnies and then went and shot a few pigeon, so there ok for grub,so am i, get the others out in the week, atb dd. rob190364 2,594
I agree with Sam, it's a shame they are so cheap as some people see them as disposable items....I bought a ferret finder off here a couple of years ago, his reason for selling it.....I can get a ferret for a fiver, if it doesn't come out I'll just get another one. One of my ferrets disappeared into a bank last season and was too deep for the locator to pick him, I just sat it out well into darkness until he came out. I wouldn't leave a ferret anywhere any more than I would leave my dog! and if one turned out to be a crap worker I'd just keep it as a pet and get another worker. Quote Link to post
