dogs-n-natives 1,182
It always amazes me when folk cant get their heads round the fact that you can have your dogs as steady and stock broken around all stuff, bombproof with other dogs, poultry everything. Yet a feral version of an animal would be hunted like any other wild animal... the dogs know the difference. If you put the work in early in the dogs life to break to stock, you will never loose that. I used to hunt feral goat, yet the dogs used would never look at any farm goat, and we even had goats at our house, the dogs lived with them no issues.., Ive even had arguements on here with other goat hunters saying their dogs are not to be trusted around livestock because of hunting wild/feral goats etc.. I raised a couple of fox cubs once upon a time, even kenneled them odd times with terriers that were out n out digging dogs...they were introduced to the cubs as soon as I got em, from then on they never looked upon them as prey. I eventually got the foxes back into the wild, took a while to get them to f**k me off completely but they soon appeared at the farm less and less often and were looking good. Maybe I dug them in the future?? There is a thread and the lad hunts feral dogs with his lurchers... as would we if we had the problem of feral dogs here, they are rife in many parts of australia, and a mega pest animal. The question was raised, are your dogs dog aggressive? Course not,! was the reply (more or less) opinions welcome DnN Quote Link to post
Guest cookiemonsterandmerlin
Because most folk on THL are uk based so have little knowledge on the topic myself included so its hard for some to grasp. But on diffrent story had dogs all my life that were fine with our farm cats but hated any other intruding cats onto the farm they just knew the diffrents. So I guess its the same with your dogs hutning ferals they just know the diffrents ATB Cookie Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
I kept pet rabbits which ran around the garden and the lurchers never touched them. But they were a pale golden colour, quite unlike wild rabbits. One day, however, the terriers got out, and guess what: no more rabbits All I found were bits of bones and fur and a heap of fat terriers Also had a Collie lurcher which knew never to touch pheasants round the pens or near farm buildings, but out on the fens she treated them as fair game and nabbed a fair few during her life. South hams hunter 8,924
Would it be similar to stock broken dogs that still took deer as from what I've read they smell completely different. Mate has a Lurcher bitch tht would kill ever cat she could if not leaded but will eat with his own cats Quote Link to post

Carraghs Gem 1,675
I got my russel when I was still breeding rabbits, rodents, guinea pigs for pet shops She was 100% around them, introduced her to ferreting and she is ok at her job, yet ignores rabbits at poultry sales She somehow knows the difference... gamerooster 1,179
my old saluki dog used to guard my gamecocks, but was a top notch feather dog, but i am afraid domestic deer, rabbits e.g. would still of been fair game, my mate was feeding his sons rabbit, and the dog sneaked his head in, and bam, goodbye rabbit!!! These were new born cubs, and I had em in the house, i brought each dog in in turn to meet them, it was no different to any other stock breaking training, some were less bothered than others about them. The terriers all were dug to regular. I know an old boy that had a pet badger, yet his terriers all dug them regular, same with a well known otterhound pack that had a pet otter at the kennels Quote Link to post

Hows it so hard for some to believe? Quote Link to post

I used to have goats... lots of farms I work on have goats... the dogs wont even look at em, can even sleep in the same barn as them, but as soon as they get a whiff of ferals, its game on. They know Quote Link to post
