GrCh 856
I run two ridgeback crosses, great endurance, heat tolerance, noses and they have high pain thresholds and no reverse gear. Mine will catch the odd hare in the day, retrieve rabbits, dispatch foxes and cats quickly, definitely don't care if they get bitten! I've had mine on feral dogs, foxes and big feral cats and are crazy good. They smash deer and other big things too. This was a purpose breeding unlike those shit ones you other people are talking about. The father was half ridgeback and the only reason I got rid of him was he was a hint too slow in the day but at night he was heaps fast enough. The bitch I own is 29 inches and 40kg and then the male was the runt of the litter that was born dead and was way smaller than the rest, he's 25-26 inches and 32kg, smashes everything but seems to just grab anywhere so I'm just gonna use him as a fox/cat dog paired up with my terrier. you hunt feral dogs with dogs? So are you dogs dog aggressive? (I'm not being a clever b*****d just curious) Quote Link to post

(I'm not being a clever b*****d just curious) The three dogs I have now are the best on feral dogs that I've had, plus they're the only ones that aren't dog aggressive. More just a prey drive thing, if they go after a dog and it submits they won't kill it... gets frustrating sometimes but no they aren't dog aggressive. 1 Quote Link to post

Bosun11 537
I like the look of these dogs seems like you have to get the right one. Thats about the size of it all Pork, like most weirdo crosses, some do well (the Ridgeback x's I've seen did) and some just don't and the chances of finding the right Ridgeback to produce your ideal mutt would be few and far between. Let's face it, finding the right sort of any cross can be a struggle, so why waste time on a Ridgeback cross? Quote Link to post

stevemac 433
to answer the question on dog agression with this x Ive run my dogs with Ausmicks dogs and there was never any trouble between them in the feild or on the truck in the box. they are the real deal when they come to bigger game agreed if I only had rats and rabbits to hunt Id be looking at whippet xs. Horses for courses. Ive also owned pur ridgebacks for 33yrs I would only continplate some that I have owned for a x just like any other breed. Maybe bull xs work more oftern because bulldogs are agressive and dumb enough to stick there head in anywhere. thankfully ridgebacks just dont look tough enough for little pistoled boys to hang around on street corners with. But I tell you this a good ridgeback when hunting will out find any bull x there ability to find came that other dogs walk past is exerlent. 2 Quote Link to post
sikastag_1 689
Seen 1 but didn't see it work, was bull ridgeback greyhound too heavy for my liking. Chid21, I'm not being funny mate so dont take this the wrong way but you've just described a very poor dog to me then said you'd have another? Why mate? These dogs were bred to hold lions at bay and yours was up and down with foxes, and it would bite people? Only one place or a dog like that mate strong dog that bites people as a working lurcher, definetly not for me. Quote Link to post

He didn't just go about biting people , but he would bite if you came in the garden without any body present , Foxes ain't what I do , edible quarry is , having said that I do like a dog that will kill a fox just incase...He was good at what he was bred for which was deer Quote Link to post
Sirius 1,391
I near bought a pure ridgeback once, I spent a lot of time visiting various kennels and owners and hanging out with the dogs. After a few months I realised that the temperament I just did not like that much as they are bred to have an very aloof and non trusting way with them especially around strangers. They can also be a very strong guarding instinct. As for Lurcher breeding they don't really have the traits I would purposely want in a Lurcher myself but I have seen a few and they looked nice enough. Regard Sirius Quote Link to post
birddog 1,354
we had a ridgeback when we lived in africa so this is nothing against them but...isn't the ridge a type of spinal deformity ? not something i'd like to rear its ugly head in a line of lurchers a generation or two down the road Quote Link to post
