The best laid plans...

I had my day all planned out. Feed some lambs, drive out an old road and use the spotting scope to try to locate some of my missing (I use the term loosely) sheep, then drive to the other side of the bog and walk about 12km through the lakes.

I got as far as driving out the old road and using the spotting scope.

Just as I was leaving my perch to walk back to the car I heard a cow looing. Off I went to investigate and this is what I found.

She had attempted to cross "quaking bog" from one hillock to another. Looks like she got into trouble almost immediately once she got onto the flat, as there were a lot of drag marks and sink holes in her tracks.

"Quaking bog", for those unfamiliar with it, is basically a skin of bog over water. It's not all safe to walk on but experience tells you what is and what isn't. It gets it's name as when you walk on it, it ripples out around you. Can be an experience if you get into the wrong place.

She had made it about 25-30 yards across before getting stuck.

I made some calls and eventually the owner and his two brothers arrived. The four of us couldn't budge her with a rope, she made no effort to help but in fairness she didn't exactly have much of a footing underneath and was beginning to become chilled.

They went off for more help and after a while 7 or 8 of us together managed to pull her out of the bog.

It was pure luck I happened on her. Owner said he wouldn't have checked them again until tomorrow evening.

At least I didn't get hurt this time!
