22-250 , 223 , or 22 swift

i see where your coming from load a light 55 g round and run it to 4k. fps for fox then load a larger round for deer runing slower.

i supose its all down to my local the firearms officer who is a nice guy compared to others i have spoke to.

We use 95 and 100 grain for fox all the time, for reasons of defeating stronger winds that we get on the tops, and less chance of deflections when shooting at a fox skulking in the rushes. It then also means it can be used for deer without any alteration to zero etc. Having said that, we use factory bought all the time.

Mainly foxing not much in the way of deer on my land. I have considered .17 and it sounds like .204 might be similar in terms of speed and accuracy.

Its more ammo cost as I would be using it for target shooting as well as general vermin control on a few windy spots.

I have a 17 rem also. Light. No recoil and uses 21 grains of powder. Great foxing round

If he will alow .243 then go with that mate, you could always book a days stalking, say on the muntjac, that will then give you a reason for the deer condition, that way if your ground is safe for .243 then he has no real reason to refuse you IE, fox control and stalking by payement or invite,it might be that you only wish to stalk once or twice a year, but that is no concern of the feo, you have good reason for the calibre and condition,so if that is what you decide you want dont be pushed into a .22 cf.

really appreciate your comment.

sorted. i'm gonna do that. and get my ds1 out the way at my local calton moor, and book a small stalk then apply.

my cert is open condition so hopefully i'll get the same again.

the land is suitable for 243 definatly. and i have a great relashionship with the land owner who has allready told me i can use what i want on the site.

and the option is there for 4000fps with a 55 grain .243 bullet which will be similar to 22-250 in any case. but like has been said .243 is a very versitile round for foxing and deer so cannot go wrong. better in the wind and lots of reloading choice. sounds like the best option for me.

many thanks to the forum members.

I can comment on both 22.250 and 220 swift as I have both these rifles and home load for both.

I started with the 22.250 shooting fox and roe the rifle is a Parker hale fitted with T 8 moderator with a swarozski 8 x 56. I have used 40- 55 grain nosler balistic tips with hodgens 4895. I have found that the accuracy is great, zeros an inch high at 150 aim straight out to 250yards and that's where bullet goes.

The 220 swift uses 40 grain nosler ballistic tips again with hodgens 4895. Fitted with T8 and same swarozski scope.

My preference as a fox rifle is the220 as u find it deadly flat, only thing I need to consider is on a really windy night get bullet drift according to wind, so on flat calm evenings/ nights have killed foxs out to 300 yrd. I have the 220 ticketed for roe so can up the bullet weight during summer outing and take bucks while sitting out.

Just my finding.

I shoot a 22-250 mate and love it, shot a lot of roe and foxes with it, excellent foxing round, heard people say its too fast a bullet for roe etc what a load of rubbish every roe iv shot with it has dropped on the spot.

Yes I know this is true as I used it for a long time in the Borders of Scotland!

One thing I failed to mention about the .22-250 is that in my experience it produced far less bruising of the carcass than the .243.Why the BDS didn't support it being legal for Roe in England and Wales escapes me?I used a 55 SP bullet and my Ruger rifle just loved the Federal Classic ammo.
