Field Target - The way it was with Terry Doe and Dave Welham

Recommended Posts

In this episode I am lucky enough to have had the time to put a camera in front of two of the greatest airgun shooters of all time. Dave Welham and Terry Doe were at the forefront of Field Target. Dave tells a few tales about how it was in the good old days and Terry shares some great stories including one where he gets shot in the lunchbox with a paintball gun.

I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did filming it.

Great film interview!

Terry Doe and Dave Welham are two men after my own heart when it comes to regarding and shooting a spring rifle. Listen to what they say from 12:35 onwards.

It's absolute perfect truth.

Nothing beats knowing you have an extremely accurate spring rifle like an HW77, on about 11.3ft/lbs and you are constantly working on your technique; developing the skills to re-compose yourself and your hold techniques, shallowing down your breathing and slowing your pulse down to a mere beep shot, after shot, after shot and then.... reliably, hit a penny sized raggy-hole group with ten or more pellets at a distance that would make most PCP shooters proud to just chip around it.

You alone made that possible with a rifle that has the accuracy to back you up and achieve it. That's real shooting to me. Nothing feels more rewarding than plastering that spot in the distance as many times as you like.....

I had a Feinwerkbau 124 Sport .22 in the late 1970s and throughout the 80s and that rifle made me realise what a top notch spring air rifle can accomplish, if you put the work in. My own '77 today is all that these two airgun figures are talking about.

I won't denigrate the humble PCP rifle. It has given accurate shooting to millions of people; a good number of who, lets be totally honest, just could not accomplish accuracy in their shooting by any other means. And for that, the PCP rifle has a great deal to be thanked for.

But, a spring rifle is almost like a living thing. A creature that comes alive when you cock it and feed it one of its favourite pellets then, rest it gently onto your shoulder and in the palm of your controlling hand on its wrist, supporting the forestock without restriction on your leading hand...

Everyone should try one, just once in their lives. Just for the experience. And of knowing what they can really accomplish in their shooting....without a diving bottle in sight!:tongue2:

Me, buy and shoot a PCP?...Do me a favour!

Great film record here Mr. Ghostmaker sir. My compliments.
