nothernlite 18,077
I have been using a beddy whippet cross for over 50 years and would have nothing else. I must explain that I am strictly a ferreter but I have known some good lamping Beddy x Whips However, I think you need to start them on the lamp before the ferrets . All I have known started the other way tend to hunt on when on the lamp. I prefer a Beddy X to a pure Whip(had both) as I believe they have a better nose. and a little more aggression But they can be bloody stubborn. Cheers Sam do you not think if the dog has any sense about it it will soon click and start to come back i always start mine ferreting first then once there a bit older and wiser take them lamping .One of mine took to it like duck to the water after a couple of time being out the other took a bit longer but like yourself i prefer the mooch and ferreting your right in what your saying but it can work the other way as well atb Quote Link to post

Cheers Sam My bitch is a ferreting bitch, took her on lamp the odd time last season. Hunted up at first the odd time but after a couple of nights out is straight back if misses one. sam007 34
As I stated I do not lamp so I cannot say if a dog will get out of hunting on or if it will be OK when trained on day work first. I can only say that over the years I have heard that it is better to train a dog on the lamp before the day work, My Present bitch has never been on the lamp but she is the best ferreting dog I have ever owned, she has a brilliant nose and if there are rabbits there she will find them ,She Marks 100% and is lightening quick on the bury. However I am sure that if she went lamping she would hunt on something terrible you would probably be there all night for 1 rabbit because she would not leave without it :D Cheers Sam Quote Link to post
