BazB 37
im thinking of building a kennel and run outside, but how do you break them to living out doors, if i let him outside and close the door, he'll howls after about 10 minutes if i forget to let him back in. the neighbours would be complaining in no time with my hound howling all the time ATB Baz Have you got a hose? no, but i'll be needing one i think Quote Link to post
Carraghs Gem 1,675
Gem, what's up with the one outside? Don't you mind if he gets nicked? They are less likely to go to the trouble of cutting through locks to nick her She doesnt look like anything special and her resale value would be peanuts and they would still have to face my rather nasty collie who would kick up a fuss and bite them and me if I was home. The one I keep inside is a well bred saluki x, far too tempting for dog theives Quote Link to post
BIGLURKS 874
We're inside till I missed 2 nights lamping and next morning had wallpaper of the walls and The whole kitchen floor ripped up all in one night was the last straw for me any dog in this house will be my girlfriends and she can pay for the damages Quote Link to post

MoChara 1,632
Keeping a lurcher indoors will have zero negative effects on him/her, as you mention the wee pet dogs - ill try and keep this short, but this is my own experience. I kept Mo Chara indoors since i got him he lived with 2 bitch Pomeranian's that done nothing but bark and fight with eachother (the wee s**ts lol), ok he started copying them barking when the doorbell rang, but other than that it had no effects on him at all. Then i got Jerry-Lee he also lived indoors since i got him and no negative effects on his side either. Then i moved house and due to the size Jerry-Lee had got and the fact i had to big dogs living inside i decided to put them outside last year, they took to it like ducks to water - and if im honest they both would rather be outside in the fresh air. I had no problems with them living inside or outside, so its just personal choice what you decide Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
Some in, and some out, but the outside dogs are in when I'm at home. All can be kennelled if in season, wet and muddy or if we're out all day. But we do have a dog flap. I have 'dog-free' parts of the house, and the dogs only live in the kitchen, utility room and living room: all washable floors etc etc. Yes, it would be easy to have them out, but I'd miss out on their company, their interesting behaviour, and the young ones burn off no end of energy tearing about in their fenced off part of the garden and digging holes under the trees. That said, my lifestyle probably wouldn't suit most people as our home and garden is designed around the dogs and their needs, to the extent of having a 20 metre 'corridor' of astro turf from their play garden to the house, which cleans their feet as they come up from the muddy part  2 Quote Link to post

I bring them in still, but it was hard for me to get used to not having them inside - although they loved it Quote Link to post
silentrunner2011 218
worken ability be the same, but cold weather will effect him more....working dogs in my opinion should be out in the kennel... Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,746
Outside, but they are allowed in. My preference is out as it saves mess, is less hassle and sometimes I just want the dogs to f**k off and let me chill. It's good to get away from them and relax. One drawback to keeping them out is thieves...... Something that is always niggling at me. Quote Link to post
TOMO 25,964
The main reason mine are out is my kids"...........whilst I have never had a dog that was aggressive towards humans, they have all been great round my kids"..............it only takes a second for you to become one of those horrible statistics,,, and a mention on the 10 o'clock news....... Just remember a lurcher is 40lb and more of muscle and teeth,,,, 3 Quote Link to post

Runningdogs3 59
I've got an 11 year old lurcher who is in all the time and the two salukis who can be in or out. Got a galvanised mesh run and kennel in garden for when we go out or they are wet and muddy but must admit if we are home they seem to spend most of their time inside these days. Quote Link to post
MuddyPaws! 27
Better outside.. The misses will soon not want him in the house when he goes in soaked wet full of mud after a night out haha. Quote Link to post
