isit really for me?

Recommended Posts

I've had numerous ferrets over the years through my old man and been ferreting with mates over the years, I've only really just got into it properly and am really excited about it and can't wait to get out again! I've handled ferrets and my old man had some really good ones but I have a problem at the moment with the ferret I've got. I don't want to give up on her and have tried numerous things but its bugging me now that the ferret just will not stop biting! I don't want to buy another ferret but I'm struggling massivly so I don't no wether to just give up now before I've even started! Do I give up on a passion that I really want to go through with or just give up now!? On a serious note I don't no what to do! All oppinions and advise greatly received. Cheers

Is it just nipping or biting hard and hanging on?

The method I use now is to hold my finger in a ferrets mouth for a couple of seconds to make it gag. They usualy get the message in a few days.

I got a pair of albino jills years ago that hadnt been handled so were nippy. I sprayed my hands with bitter apple and every time they nipped I held my finger in the ferrets mouth for a second to let them get the taste. This put them off biting in no time.

She's proper biting and hanging on for dear life! If it was just a little nip I wouldn't mind but my hands can't really take any more of her crap! Lol... I might just have to go back to the bloke I got this ferret from and get another, he's got some 16 week old kits so that might help?

Hi mate im going thru the same problem, just recently got 2 white jills from a local market 1 seems ok but the other 1 jeez, you can pick her up but if you show her the other hand then its wham and she means it to, ive tried the flick on the nose and ramming me nuckle in its gob so it gags but no joy just keeps on biteing, i handle them in the morning and at night as much as i can really, also my hands cant take much more so my plan is just to keep picking them up so they get use to my hands and in a weeks time when hands are healed a bit try again.

I think what makes it seem so bad is over the years when i had a new ferrets they had been handled always nipped a bit but got over it, Good luck with yours

how old is the ferret...if its more than last years kits then it'll be hard to break the biting....the ferret needs confidence to be handled. so plenty of that. if you are then maybe a rethink on the ferrets you keep.

maybe ask on here for a couple of adults you can start with, for hunting with this season. see how you get on.
