Lab 10,979
You will always need A grade students in the army ... How for example would the intelligence corps survive otherwise ........ Of course you do need intelligent people mate, you need them in most walks of life if not every. I still think you could take most able bodied people of the street and make the a soldier........If thats not the case then why do people say criminals should get National Service?.... I have done 2 years as an instructor in a training depot and the wastage was over 50% on each intake it is down to a number of reasons.......... 1. Some people can't handle the fitness and will never meet the required standard .......... 2. Although you don't need to be Einstein to be an infantry soldier there is a lot to learn over a very shortly period of time and unfortunately some lads just can't take on board the information needed ....... 3. You are pushed physically and mentally hard in basic training and unfortunately some young lads can't handle it and break physically and mentally ..... 4. There are a lot of guys that haven't got the attitude to work as part of a team and can't take orders ... Needless to say these types are no good to the army 5. Then you have the lads that just haven't got the minerals to do the job no matter how hard they try they are just not cut out for that type of life .......... These are just a few examples of why not everybody is capable of being a soldier ............... Ok, yip i take that all on board.............

These are just a few examples of why not everybody is capable of being a soldier ............... On the flip side of that, not every soldier is capable of being an everybody. I've met plenty who wander around like little lost sheep once they stop being told what/how/when to do stuff. As many men as the army creates, I'd think it destroys it's fair share too, those lost sheep we've all seen. Totally agree with the unable to work as a team thing, if a team is only as strong as it's weakest member, then I'd prefer to stand or fall on my own ability, not because someone else let me down. I don't play football/rugby/cricket etc for the same reasons, maybe it's a failing of mine, but striving to excel on my own has stood me in good stead so far. As a lad, I was attracted to joining the army, most of my mates did at 16 (junior leaders?) the reason for the attraction was the role of the army as a defence force, I was 16 in 1982 when the Falklands was going on, Ulster was kicking off, Iranian Embassy siege etc and that was attractive, now though ............ seriously, why do lads join to go to Afghan? I really don't get it. The horrific mutilations they stand a fair chance of suffering, the trauma of a dirty war, for what? A safer Britain? Really? We can't even deport or kill the cnt that started most of the trouble here! I see the Afghan campaign as futile, is that just me? I didn't join because at the time, I was earning what my mates got for a month in a week, with little stress and I was pretty much my own boss, just the way I like it. I wouldn't make a soldier I know that, I question everything.
Waz 4,252
I went to join the army at about 18. Got as far as the medical and they failed me
socks 32,253
I don't think you can describe an ex soldier as "a little lost sheep" however for some it is a sad fact that they get so instatutionalised they they struggle to cope with life in civvy ... The biggest problem is not that they need to follow orders as every soldier is taught to think for himself and make split second decisions that will save his and his mates lives the biggest problem is having to adjust to working within health and safety rules and watching what you say incase you upset somebody etc etc etc ........... strongbow 149
I just work borders, got 2 young ones that will be getting entered this season. I got two that are going to be entered this year most prob end of the year they will be present every Sunday out with the hounds having a look as they have been the last few times out and they are showing good signs they are flying In the cover just bunny bashing. Everyone you hear will say they are slow to come on but mine have been keen as hell since 6 months old. It's the first pair I have had always kept lakelands and Russell's and these have been no slower than all other terriers. Parents do the job. I won't be using mine for just ground work I want them to hunt and work all quarry above and below. just want to know if you had a working standard to which your dogs had to meet?? also what would you do about it if they didnt make that standard?? And the increasing 'green on blue' killings. It's hard to imagine, sitting down for a 10 o'clock cuppa and a natter, and suddenly one of your 'colleagues' decides to open fire on us... Frightening thoughts.

And alot I would not like to be stood next to when shit hits the fan. Infact id prefer a stupif f**k to a coward. I went re so perhaphs different from infantry. But still full of thick lads. Infact th ones who couldnt hack it was the more academic. But I think if you have a can do attitude basic aint what 'they' say it was.
