bedwhippet 164
my pal has a 4 1/2 year old saluki grey dog has had 3 exceptional seasons under him and has been asked to stud him to a couple of bitches,, his reply to these lads asking about his dog was NO he is not tested propperly,, a dog needs 3-4 seasons minimum before you breed off them, its breeding off young untried stock that fills up dog shelters up and down the country, why add to that when you can apply all the graft you can get into your young bitch, work her hard, reap the rewards and when she is 4-5 years old and tested to a certain amount breed off her but a dog cant be and wont be tested at 18 months old mate,, all the best Quote Link to post
crorider 174
Seen that bitch run, aint seen too many dogs working cos i aint been in this game long but she's the quickest ive seen in a straight line, well trained and obedient. Runs straight down the lamp flat out from a massive slip every time. If a good proven dog with good feet and stamina was put across her id definitely have a pup. From what i understand from everything ive read on here, you can turn a half decent dog into a real good one with time and effort and a shit one into an average one aswell. if Hes been working dogs a while and shes the best youngun hes had and one of the best hes seen, then surely putting a proven dog across her with good feet and stamina aint taking too much of a risk?? Only give the pups to mates who you know will put the time and effort in Edited September 25, 2012 by crorider Quote Link to post
johnny 2 367
so she was out hunting twice a week at 6 mnth old killed her first rabbit at 6 months mate, no bullshit Whether you breed is up to you.Comments like that just make it easy to look elsewhere for a pup. 1 Quote Link to post
derbylad1 293
at 6 months of age and running hares....then your mad, you can kill a pup doing that. if it was an accident then fair enough. then last season the "pup" was out working twice a week..again your mad, you can over match her, break her confidence or teach her shiity traits, like yapping, jacking oh and yes...over compensating/overshooting. A good or great dog is made of good breeding, some is what is in the dogs head and the rest is how the dog is educated, brought on and entered into the field. breeding, let the bitch be what it is..."a pup", that is learning the ropes. i'll wouldn't dream of breeding from any botch (or dog for that matter) until it is properly tested and only you will know when that is. usually when you see the lurcher has reached its ceiling and its full potential. and only then think to yourself, do i really want this type of running dog again. if you do then great and breed....if not. look else where. what ever you decide..all the best for this season, because by the sounds of it your well and truly happy with her right now. birddog 1,354
ive got to agree that working the bitch, making her the best you can over even a year or two is the way to go, you'll maybe find her style or your taste in lurchers change and you can then pick a proven stud to suit, my bitch is near 5 and caught lots of rabbits day / night summer / winter for 4 seasons and its only now that i'm thinking of breeding her Quote Link to post

birddog 1,354
What if you had a good tested bitch,With a lot going for her that was plagued with foot injurys,Would you breed from her? if this was a general question and not just aimed at the original poster kieren, i learned my lesson on this 30 yrs ago i'd got a cracking non ped pup bred by a multiple champion out of an open class bitch that had never won a title but had at one time or other beaten every champion on the go, by the time the pup was 10 months she'd had a toe off and broken another two, fast as feck, a wee cracker at home everyone adored 'becky' but she had to go turns out the reason her mum never won a title was she couldn't get more than a couple of runs in a row because of dodgy feet, always had a wee thing about feet since and i don't think you could call a bitch tested if it had been plagued by foot injuries in any case Quote Link to post
derbylad1 293
its been tested alright mate....but sadly failed that test. Quote Link to post
