Cross breeding

Recommended Posts

Me and a mate was having a chat and this question came up so I'll ask yous. Right for the sake of argument say you had a good bitch that you wanted to breed a litter from and the best dog that you knew of was a different breed say a jrt or pat lakie border whatever ,and said dog was a proper grafter in every way. Would

you use the dog over your bitch?

just put the best of the best to the best and hope for the best

Iwould always use best available to best available.Maybe im luckier than other you in that i have access to at least 3 top quality black dogs from bloodlines that suit me and no i dont believe the can

Iwould only cass it as outcrossing if i used a dog from a different family/line not a different breed.Maybe im just stubborn and pigheaded but i wouldnt breed the bitch untill i could find a top quali

My mates Owns a black bitch and his answer was he wouldn't use a jrt or any other breed no matter how good it was . He would wait for a dog of the same breeding that he thought was good enough. The reason "he doesn't like jrt or any other breed " lol

Its a case of time and choice, if you have the luxury of time and you have access to a dog of the same type and ability then that would be good, if you only have a dog of a different type but the ability you need then you use what you can get

With the world being a small place now days people do tend to stick to the same type of terrier, blacks, russells etc, when people weren't as mobile as we are now it was the closest dog that was the right size, working ability was a far greater attribute than size or colour, but with the car or even the train being such an easy option for travel then people can breed for type and colour, lets hope they try for the working ability as well

@Ginja John . So to confirm, you would put sid or that bitch to a jack russel or other breed . Like I said the theoretical dog or bitch would be superior to yours in graft , or would you wait for the right black dog?

If i had a bitch that a bitch that i considered worthy of produceing a litter i would have done my homework and found a suitable dog of suitable breeding long before the bitch came in season so i wouldnt have to wait for the right dog to come along.Crossbreeding just because there was nothing else about or nothing closer would just be lazy.

@downsouth. Fairplay mate I know you would do your homework and choose a dog of the same breeding. Stick with me now I'm only playing devils advocate. If you had seen a dog of different breeding be dug to week in week out and achieve more than any dog of the same breeding as your own. Also say the dog came from a line of workers that produce consistent grafters. Why would you choose a dog of lesser quality just because it was the same breed?

Over the years ive chosen to keep dogs going back to Gould and Old Nuttal blood as in my opinion they are the best dogs for what i want with the exception of some of the Stevens type stuff that ive seen in the last few years but from what i can work out and what ive been told right or wrong they go back to old Gould stuff anyway. If i saw a black dog from a different line that was far superior to anything i knew of from them lines that was a proven producer even when outcrossed i would consider using it but as for a different breed no way.In just over 20 years of keeping working terriers ive yet to see a Russell,Lakey,Border that can better a top class black dog for what i want thats why i never kept Russells,Lakeys or Borders.Slips would you have used a Russel on Moss or Fran ? :hmm:
