By adding Deerhound or Saluki to a Greyhound you are hoping to add stamina, (amongst other things), to speed. By crossing a Saluki to a Deerhound, what would you be adding to either breed ? Don't get

dava best saluki v best deerhound   ground determined winner heavy hill heather deerhound, easyer going saluki

Anyone seen or ran a straight half x saluki deerhound, what were they like as an allround dog pre ban, any pictures ?

Don't get me wrong; they may turn out winners, but I can't realy see a Sal/Deer X being any better than a pure Saluki or Deerhound !

Great answer, a quite pointless cross

I'd say saluki deerhound be better than straight deerhound but what it would add to saluki I don't know maybe a keenness for fox as not many straight salukis will take fox there must be a good reason as to why this cross hasn't been used as with all the strange crosses there is a reason there not popular

But I only say that may be better than pure deerhound as the one I've seen run were lacking not putting down the breed as I've only seen a handful and maybe it was just my impression one off the owners who lives in the highlands says her dogs still work original quary regular so perhaps that's why they seemed half hearted on coursing

just my opinion guys but aren't both renowned for much the same things like tough feet and temperament, stamina etc and i thought the purpose of crossing was to bring something new to the mix i'm not saying they would be good or bad i just don't see the point

cmon big fella dh and salukis are totally differant animals

salukis have far more stamina than dh and if you got the right saluki and right dh I cant see how they wouldnt make handy animals ....but the main thing is finding the right blood and types imo

OK, so adding Deerhound to the Saluki, what are you adding that the Saluki hasn't already got ? Coat, obviously, and possibly nose. As I said, they may make decent dogs, but any better than the base breeds ? Sal/Grey x Deer/Grey is a different thing; I've seen some very good dogs from this cross; but a straight Saluki/Deerhound; I'd give that a miss, personaly.

on a slightly diff perpective wich pure of the 2 would one prefer in there make up of a all round type the saluki or the deerhound , i knows my choice . atb bunnys.

A good question mate ! And as a fan of both breeds, if I had to make a choice of only one of them in an "allrounder" type of Lurcher, I'd have to go for the Deerhound. But of course this is only a hypothetical question, and there is room for both breeds in Lurcher breeding !

i would prefer to have deerhound blood in a lurcher rather than saluki, but thats my opinion so know smart arses question why lol

most deerhounds i see are far too big to take in the field really speaking. the proper bred stuff that romany will hopefully elaborate here, used to be up againt salukis in coursing comps, on the moors and the fens if im not mistaken? i could be wrong, so if one was much better at coursing than the other it would be a pretty pointless coursing comp wouldnt you think? Atb

I'm sure Bill will elaborate, but I'm sure that Deerhounds and Saluki's were never ran against each other in organised coursing ! Deerhounds were ran at Saluki meetings and vice versa, but I don't think they ran against each other. If they did, I'd love to hear the results ??

f**k it, Id give a saluki/deerhound a shot....why, I hear you ask, well, theoretacally they should be a good size,( which is helpful in covering the hill,) good feet,( for the rocky land), decent coat perhaps,( for the beau northern weather), and hopefully endless feckin stamina (which is what the dam thing will need because it wont be the swiftest hound going, ) but up here it would certainly have the space to stretch after a bunny over rough hill country.

But what are the chances of someone putting the right saluki and the right deerhound together?

I'd ask again, mate... what would the cross give that the parents couldn't ?? If I was running a pure Saluki, or a pure Deerhound, or a F1 Deer Saluki, what would the difference be ?? In my opinion; nothing !

Cheers.
